Hornets lineup has new faces at many positions

By JEFF OLSON
Special to The Gazette

Get ready for the new Rosholt Hornets because the team will look completely different from last year.

They lost 15 seniors from last year's undefeated conference champion team. This year they will play in a new division under a new head coach.

Roger Clark will be at the helm for the Hornets this year after former head coach Jim Grygleski stepped down earlier in the summer. After spending eight seasons as an assistant, Clark is stepping up to the plate as head coach. The team is also moving up to the Central Wisconsin Conference (CWC) Large Division.

It's a whole new experience for Clark. "Most of the kids I coached before have all graduated," he said. This year's team will feature six seniors on the 41-man roster. "We got the numbers, just not the size," Clark said. "All skilled positions are decent. We have a lot of people going into different positions."

Senior Randy Printz will be the feature back in the backfield for the Hornets wing offense. "He's a good all-around player with good speed and size," Clark said. It was those features that made Clark move him from defensive back to linebacker this season on defense.

Junior Donny Carter will be the feature fullback and junior Devin Groshek will see time at another wingback.

Senior James Kosmalski will be taking the snaps for the Hornets, for the first time in his varsity career.

Junior Adam Macht will return as one receiver and Clark seems to like a couple of his attributes for that position. "He's got good height and good hands," said Clark. Senior Josh Schulist will be the other target for Kosmalski.

Seniors Ross Thornton and John Kurszewski will be anchoring the offensive line and will protect the outside from their positions, as starting tackles for the Hornets. Clark sees a lot of potential in the future for this group. "We have a pretty young group," he said. "Our size is really small," hinting at the fact that he knows that they will see much bigger guys in the CWC Large Division then they did last year in the Small Division.

The Hornets plan on playing a 5-3 defense with five defensive linemen, two linebackers and three defensive backs. One of the keys for the Hornets defense will be the defensive backs. "We have a good defensive back group. That's why we were able to move Printz this year," Clark said.

Two offensive players, Kosmalski and Macht, will play both ways and see lots of playing time in the defensive backfield. Junior Matt Rice will be the third defensive back. Kosmalski, Macht and Printz are about the only players that will see time both on offense and defense.

Once again, moving to a larger conference Clark thinks he has to get fresh bodies in there in order to compete. "Size is a big difference from a large to small school," he said. The defensive line for the Hornets will include a big junior class. As far as strategy goes, Clark wants to give everybody a chance to play and wants to put the best guys out there. "I'm here to put the top 11 players on the field," he said. "We have to go out and play with a lot of heart and desire."

Helping with those causes will be defensive coordinator and former head coach Grygleski, junior varsity coach Kevin Chick and volunteer coaches Shawn Cychosz and Tony Schmidt.

All the coaches are hoping to whip the players into shape before their first game on Friday, Aug.30, when they host Pacelli at 4 p.m.
