SPASH

Football: The Panthers (2-1) tasted defeat for the first time this season, losing to Merrill, 20-7. SPASH's lone touchdown came on a late pass from Jake Jahnke to Eric Napiwocki.

Girls Swimming: The team remained unbeaten in the Valley Conference by winning a dual meet on Thursday, Sept. 6. Callie Wild won the 50-meter freestyle and 100 freestyle. Hillary Loomis took first in the 100 butterfly, Jesse Thompson won the 100 backstroke and Sharisa Hillstead won the 100 breaststroke.

The relay team of Thompson, Wild, Hillstead and Liz Herder won the 200 medley and the team of Wild, Loomis, Herder and Hillstead took the 200 freestyle.

Soccer: The Panthers (1-1 in the Valley, 2-3 overall) broke a three-game scoreless streak by defeating Marshfield, 2-0, on Thursday, Sept. 6. Dan Schmeeckle and Jay Nygaard scored for SPASH.

Volleyball: The Panthers finished in a four-way tie for fourth at the Appleton West Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Panthers beat Wausau East in a Wisconsin Valley Conference match up. The win improved SPASH's conference mark to 2-0 and 12-7-7 overall. Ashley Konopacki led the team with 17 kill points, six kills and six blocks. Mindy Slattery chipped in with 31 assists.

Girls Tennis: The Panthers tennis team tied for first at the Green Bay Southwest Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Lauren Hom won all of her sets to win the No. 1 singles and Megan Palmer won in No. 2 singles in straight sets.

The Panthers won every set in a victory over Merrill on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Lauren Hom (No. 1 singles) and Lindsey Arnold (No. 3 singles) were particularly dominant, winning every game.

Cross Country: The Stevens Point boys and girls teams both took first place at the SPASH invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.

The Panther boys finished with 49 points, Wausau East was second with 89 and Baraboo third with 91. Chris Solinsky led the boys, winning the race in 15 minutes, 55 seconds. Quinn Baumberger was fifth, Luke Langhorst was 11th, Matt Ziehr 13th and Mickey Katz 19th. Also running for the Panthers were Curt Mitchell 23rd, Justin Young 26th and Tom Winkelman 33rd.

The girls won with 51 points. Baraboo took second with 64 and Merrill was third with 90.

Freshman Emma Tauchman led the Panthers with a third-place finish, and her sister, Kara, also a freshman, was fifth. Jackie Kropp was 10th, Melissa Carlson 16th and Kim Klosno 17th to close out the SPASH scoring. Also running for the Panthers were Zoe Browne 20th, Becky Sikorski 28th and Emily Virant 30th.

The boys and girls teams took first at the D.C. Everest Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 11. (See story page 12.)

PACELLI

Football: The Cardinals crushed Shiocton, 47-0. See story page 12.

Volleyball: The Cardinals stayed tied for first in the Central Wisconsin Valley Conference large school division by defeating Marion on Thursday, Sept. 6.

Toni Johnson had 11 assists and three kills while Sara Klasinski added six kills.

Girls Tennis: The Cardinals lost, 6-1, to Newman on Monday, Sept. 10. The doubles team of Mandy Clifford and Erin McCann scored the team's only win.

Cross Country: The girls finished 13th in the SPASH Cross Country Invitational at SPASH on Saturday. Angela Peters led the Cardinals finishing in 40th place. She was followed by Chrissy Nowak 88th, Beth Boden 95th, Nikki Theisen 97th and Holly Ligman 99th.

ROSHOLT

Football: The Hornets routed Menominee Indian, 48-6, improving their record to 3-0 overall and 2-1 in the CWC small schools division.

The Hornets had all the points they'd need after building a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. A.J. Wiza scored first, with a one-yard touchdown run. Brad Zdroik hit James Kosmalski on a 12-yard touchdown pass and Randy Printz scored on a one-yard run.

Volleyball: The team won a pair of games against Gresham on Thursday, Sept. 8. Katie Kosobucki led the team with 14 assists and Emily Steines had six kills. Amber Groshek served 12 points.

On Saturday, Sept. 8, the Hornets took first place at the Wautoma Invitational. Kosobucki led the team with 55 assists. Stephanie Wierzba led the team in kills with 24.

Cross Country: The girls team took fifth at the SPASH Invitational on Saturday, with 145 points. Tami Scott took first in the girls race in 15:20. She was followed by Lindsey Peplinski in 29th, Jackie Zdroik in 32nd, Nicky Bembenek in 35th and Jamie Scott in 48th. Also running for the Hornets were Laura Simonis 52nd, Jacki Yenter 53rd and Kaitlin Ferg 64th.

The boys finished 10th, led by Brady Staszak who was 12th. Other Hornet runners were Paul Zdroik 34th, Tyler Staszak 71st, Casey Giese 75th and Matt Rice 78th. Also running were Andy Osowski 86th and Brandon Bembenek 95th.

In the D.C. Everest Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 11, the girls won the Division 2 title while the boys finished second in Division 2. See story page 12.

AMHERST

Football: The Falcons lost a game to Manawa, 27-7, and also their starting running back and cornerback, Derek Konkol, to a knee injury. The extent of his injury is unknown.

The team's lone score came on a one-yard touchdown run by Konkol's replacement, Sam Werner.

Volleyball: The Falcons beat Bonduel, 15-12, 16-14, 4-15, on Thursday, Sept. 6.

The team took second place at the Wautoma Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8, by going 6-4.

On Monday, Sept. 10, the Falcons went 3-3 to bring their overall record to 8-7-3. Molly Simkins led the team by going 28-28 from the service line, adding 13 kills and five blocks.

Cross Country: The boys finished sixth in the SPASH Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8, while the girls were 10th.

Tim Olson led the Falcons with a 16th-place finish, Jordan Selbo was 31st, Brandon Wolding was 44th, Scott Hintz was 49th and Spencer Selbo was 73rd. Other Amherst runners were Jeremy Leck 76th, Brandon Hintz 84th and Jeremiah Osborn 89th.

The girls were led by Brittany Dick who finished eighth. Also scoring for the Hornets were Lindsey Groshek 50th, Jessi Starr 75th, Jackie Hucke 77th and Melanie Ott 81st. The other runners were Christy Cloninger 83rd, Megan Bronk 86th and Kati Stuczynski 96th.

The Amherst boys won the Division 2 title at the D.C. Everest Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 11. See story page 12.

ALMOND-BANCROFT

Football: The team (1-2) lost to Iola-Scandinavia, 26-14. Gabe Lopez scored on a 20-yard run and Joel Erickson threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Vince Konczyak to keep things close.

Volleyball: The team lost three games to Bowler on Thursday, Sept. 6. Darlene Turzinski and Jade Gutke led the team with four kills each.
