CROSS COUNTRY: The season gets underway this weekend for the Pointers as the men's and women's teams compete
at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Pointer men's team enters the season
ranked 11th in the first NCAA Division III poll. The teams ran in an alumni/intrasquad meet on Saturday at Iverson
Park to tune up for this weekend's first meet.
FOOTBALL (1-0 overall, 0-0 WIAC): An outstanding defensive effort led the Pointers to a season-opening,
14-10 victory over Ohio Northern on Saturday. The Pointers held the Polar Bears to 98 total yards in the second
half and just 275 for the game after Ohio Northern had averaged 505 yards per game last season.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) also snapped Ohio Northern's streak of 41 consecutive games
having scored 20 points and the defense provided eight of the Pointers' 14 points.
Offensively, the Pointers piled up 409 total yards and ran 95 offensive plays. UW-SP hosts UW-Oshkosh in the
annual Spud Bowl at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Goerke Field. The match up is a non conference game and the
first of two meetings with the Titans this season. The Spud Bowl kicks off with the annual "Spuds and Suds"
tailgate picnic at Goerke Field at 4 p.m. The event features potatoes, bratwurst, Point Beer and soda.
GOLF: The Pointers will take part in their only home meet of the season Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16,
when they host the UW-SP Invitational at Tree Acres Golf Course in Plover. The first tee times are set for 9 a.m.
on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Pointers finished second at the Ripon Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 11, missing a first place finish by
only one stroke. Carthage College captured the team title by shooting a total of 390. UW-SP finished second with
391 and St. Norbert finished third with 458.
UW-SP finished 11th of 14 teams at last weekend's UW-Whitewater Invitational. Sophomore Andrea Miller (Sheboygan)
shot an 84 on Saturday to lead the Pointers, while Sunday's action was rained out. The Pointers finished with a
385 team score and UW-Eau Claire won the meet with 330 strokes.
SOCCER (3-0 overall, 0-0 WIAC):
Sept. 12 - Home vs. UW-La Crosse, 4 pm (Pointer Soccer Bowl)
Sept. 15 - Home vs. UW-Superior, 2 pm (Pointer Soccer Bowl)
Sept. 16 - at University of Chicago, 2 pm
A busy week lies ahead for the Pointers as they open their WIAC schedule with home matches scheduled on Wednesday,
Sept. 12, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, and then travel to Chicago on Sunday, Sept. 16, to face the University
of Chicago at 2 p.m.
UW-SP improved to 3-0 against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents with a 4-2 victory over
St. Benedict on Saturday.
TENNIS (1-0 overall, 0-0 WIAC):
Sept. 12 - Home vs. St. Norbert, 6 pm (Multi-Activity Center)
Sept. 14-15 - at UW-La Crosse Invitational
Kathryn Pollock (Brookfield) won at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead the Pointers to a 6-3 season-opening
victory over Carroll on Friday, Sept. 7, in Waukesha. Pollock won her singles match and then teamed with Aimee
Strebig (Appleton) to win in doubles.
The Pointers finished seventh of eight teams at the UW-Whitewater Invite, which was shortened by rain on Saturday,
Sept. 8.
UW-Stevens Point was scheduled to host St. Norbert Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Multi-Activity Center for its
first home match of the season.
VOLLEYBALL (1-3 overall, 0-0 WIAC)
The home season gets under way for the Pointers this week as they host St. Norbert on Thursday, Sept. 13, at
7 p.m. at Berg Gym. The Pointers also will take part in the St. Benedict Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept.
14-15.
UW-SP opened its season by finishing 1-3 at the Elmhurst Invitational, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8. The Pointers
dropped their first three matches before beating Grinnell (Iowa) 30-22, 28-30, 30-26, 30-28. UW-Stevens Point lost
to 13th ranked Elmhurst (Ill.) 30-16, 30-22, 30-18 and lost to Illinois Wesleyan 30-18, 30-19, 30-28 on Friday.
