UW-Stevens Point inducts six into athletic Hall of Fame

Six former standout athletes at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will be inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame on Sat., Oct. 6, following the Pointers' homecoming football game against UW-Whitewater.

Football players Kirk Baumgartner and Kevin Deates will be inducted along with basketball player Jon Julius, soccer player Susie Lindauer, field hockey and softball player Lori McArthur and wrestler Tom Weix.

The banquet will be held at the University Center on campus and will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails at 5 p.m. For tickets, contact the UW-Stevens Point alumni relations office at 346-3811. The hall of famers will also be in the homecoming parade, which runs through campus, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Baumgartner (1986-89) is one of the most prolific passers in NAIA history, throwing for 14,847 career yards, including 5,127 yards in 1987. He threw for 122 career touchdowns and was selected to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

Deates (1985-88) is currently the Pointers' defensive coordinator and had a playing career that included a first-team All-American selection as a defensive lineman in 1988. He was a two-time All-Conference performer.

Julius (1988-92) ranks second on the Pointers' all-time scoring list with 1,625 points, which is 24 points behind Tim Naegeli. He also ranks second all-time in field goals made with 645 and third in field goal percentage at 58.3 percent.

Lindauer (1989-92) ranks second in Pointer history with career numbers of 55 goals, 45 assists and 155 points. She was the third player in Division III history and is still the only Pointer ever to reach career numbers of 40 goals and 40 assists.

McCarthur (1978-83) holds school records for shutouts in a season with 20 and in a career with 35 as a goalie on the Pointers' field hockey team. She also was a two-time first-team All-Conference catcher in softball.

Weix (1987-92) ranks second on the Pointers' all-time career win list with a 121-37-1 career record. He is a two-time Division III runner-up, having lost in overtime both times. He amassed a school record 376.5 career team points.

Cross Country: Becky Lebak (Burlington) finished second among 508 runners to lead the UW-SP women's team to a sixth place finish at the University of Minnesota Invitational Saturday, Sept. 29. Lebak had a time of 18:10 and was the highest Division III finisher, while the Pointers were second among Division III schools in the meet which featured 43 Division II and III teams. The Pointers were ranked seventh in the latest national rankings.

The men's team, which is ranked 11th in the country, finished first among 11 teams at the Beloit Invitational Saturday, Sept. 29. UW-SP had a balanced team effort, led by Charlie Thompson (Madison), who was 10th in 27:28. Cameron Cummings (Wild Rose) was 12th in 27:45 as the Pointers had eight runners among the top 23 finishers.

The Pointer men's team will take part in the University of Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 5, in South Bend, Ind., while the women will participate in the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Friday, Oct. 5.

Football: (3-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC): UW-SP earned its first win at La Crosse since 1962 in dramatic fashion with a 17-16 win over UW-La Crosse on Saturday.

The Pointers rallied from a 16-0 first half deficit and capped the performance when junior Doug Mittelstaedt (Reedsburg) blocked a 28-yard field goal attempt with 21 seconds remaining.

Trailing 16-0, UW-SP got on the board with a 35-yard field goal by Ricardo Vega (Palm Springs, Calif.) late in the first half. Quarterback Scott Krause (Waunakee), who finished with 213 yards passing, then hit Chad Valentyne (Kimberly) for a 27-yard touchdown with 11 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 16-10.

The Pointers used a 13-play, 96-yard drive for the game-winner in the fourth quarter. Krause found Tony Romano (Waunakee) for a 48-yard pass down to the eight-yard line and then hit Kurt Kielblock (Scandinavia) for an eight-yard touchdown on third down with 2:15 left for the go-ahead score.

UW-SP has now won five of its last six games and hosts UW-Whitewater for homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. The Warhawks bring a 3-1 record into this weekend's game.

Golf: UW-SP finished eighth of 11 teams at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational after shooting a season-best team score of 383 during a round Sunday, Sept. 30.
The meet was the Pointers' final preparation for the WIAC Championships at Eau Claire Friday and Saturday, Oct 5 and 6.

Molly Tast (Big Lake, Minn.) had the tournament's fifth best score on Sunday with an 83. Combined with her 97 from Saturday, Sept. 29, the freshman placed 18th overall with a 181. Andrea Miller (Sheboygan) was 22nd overall with a 184.

Soccer: (8-0 overall, 4-0 WIAC): The Pointers outscored three opponents, 26-0, and outshot their foes 117-6 last week. The team trounced Edgewood, 6-0, UW-Superior, 12-0, and UW-Whitewater, 8-0. UW-SP, ranked third in the NCAA Division III rankings, is off to its best start in school history and has now won 24 of its last 25 matches.

The Pointers also set a NCAA record on Saturday for the longest unbeaten streak against conference opponents in Division III history with their 48th consecutive win against a WIAC opponent. The Pointers already held the all-time record for longest conference winning streak.

Sophomore Kelly Fink (West Bend) scored seven goals during the week, including three against Edgewood, to give her 11 goals for the season. Emma Porter (Owen Sound, Ontario) and Jenny Bruce (Menasha) each had four goals last week, including three each against UW-Superior.

The Pointers have a big week ahead with a home match scheduled on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. against WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire. Friday, Oct. 5, UW-SP travels to face ninth-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) in a rematch of last season's NCAA third round match, which the Pointers won 1-0.

Tennis: (3-3 overall, 1-2 WIAC): Aimee Strebig (Appleton) pulled out a three-set win at No. 2 singles for the Pointers' lone victory in an 8-1 loss at Ripon Friday, Sept. 28. UW-SP is now 3-3 overall for the season.

Strebig beat Megan Anderson, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, to raise her season record to 3-3. The Red Hawks won all of the other positions in straight sets to post the team victory.

UW-SP has another non-conference match scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 3, when it travels to Lawrence for a 3:30 p.m. match. The Pointers, who are 1-2 in the WIAC, will host UW-La Crosse on Friday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. on the Allen Center Courts, or in the Multi-Activity Center in case of poor weather. The Pointers have had seven consecutive home matches held indoors.

Volleyball (4-8 overall, 0-3 WIAC): UW-SP picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational to snap a five-match losing streak and raise its record to 4-8 overall.

The Pointers have three home matches scheduled this week, all against WIAC opponents. Tuesday, Oct. 2, UW-SP hosts fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater, which finished runner-up in Division III last season. Friday, Oct. 5, the Pointers take on UW-Superior and Saturday, Oct. 6, the team faces UW-Eau Claire.

The Pointers defeated Augsburg, 30-20, 30-26, 27-30, 30-28, and then beat Viterbo, 30-27, 21-30, 30-19, 30-25, on Saturday, Sept. 29. Friday, Sept. 28, the Pointers lost to UW-Stout, 30-12, 30-23, 30-22, and to UW-Superior, 30-27, 24-30, 37-35, 17-30, 15-12.

Lucy Fisher (Appleton) was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 166 assists in the four matches. Nikki Kennedy (Juneau) had a big weekend with 106 digs, including 34 against Augsburg. She also posted 18 kills against UW-Superior.

Jessica Parker (Milwaukee) had 18 kills against Augsburg and finished with 54 kills for the tournament.
