Pointer women finish third at Midwest Challenge
Cross Country: Becky Lebak (Burlington)
finished second among 208 runners to lead the Pointer women's team to a third-place finish at the Midwest Challenge
in Colfax last weekend.
Lebak finished with a time of 18:15 and the Pointers had 51 team points to hold a wide margin over fourth-place
St. Olaf, which had 94 points.
The men's team was seventh of 18 teams at the Notre Dame Invitational, a meet that featured NCAA Division I, Division
II, Division III and NAIA schools. Mark LaLonde (Park Falls) was ninth overall at 25:23.
Both the Pointer men and women will run at the UW-La Crosse Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Football (3-1 overall, 1-1 WIAC):
A blocked kick in the final minute was the difference for the second straight week, but this time the block went
against the Pointers as UW-Whitewater blocked an extra point with 42 seconds left to beat the Pointers 28-27.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point trailed 28-14 entering the fourth quarter, but Scott Krause (Waunakee)
hit Chad Valentyne (Kimberly) for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 13:11 left and then found Tony Romano (Waunakee)
for a 39-yard touchdown with 42 seconds left before the Warhawks blocked the extra point. UW-SP had beaten UW-La
Crosse 17-16 the previous week on a blocked field goal with 21 seconds left.
The Pointers rolled up 402 total yards as Krause was 20-for-35 passing for 251 yards. Senior tight end Steve Jones
(Stevens Point) caught seven passes for 81 yards.
UW-Stevens Point is one of six WIAC teams with a 1-1 record after two weeks. The Pointers' opponent this week,
UW-River Falls, is the league's only undefeated team at 2-0, while UW-La Crosse is 0-2.
The annual Spuds and Suds picnic will follow this week's game, on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. at Goerke Field,
from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Goerke Park. The picnic features potatoes, bratwurst, beer and soda.
Golf: Andrea Miller (Sheboygan)
had the best performance of any UW-SP golfer in the five-year history of the WIAC championships by finishing second
overall at this year's event in Eau Claire.
The sophomore shot an 83 on Saturday, Oct. 6, and followed with an 84 on Sunday, Oct. 7, for a two-day total of
167. UW-Eau Claire's Kristi Moss won the individual title with a 159 as the Blugolds also won the team title with
a 682 score.
UW-SP finished fourth of five teams for the second straight year and shot a season-best 358 in its final round
of the season on Sunday.
Soccer (9-1 overall, 5-0 WIAC):
UW-SP was scheduled to play UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday, Oct.10, at 4 p.m. in Oshkosh. Both teams entered the showdown
at 5-0 in the WIAC. The Pointers can clinch their fifth straight WIAC title with victories Wednesday in Oshkosh
and Friday, Oct. 12, at UW-Platteville in a rescheduled game from a postponement earlier this season.
UW-SP suffered its first loss of the season last week in a 2-0 loss at eighth-ranked Wheaton. The Pointers, who
are ranked third in Division III, outshot the Thunder 13-12, but had their 18-match regular season winning streak
snapped in the loss.
The Pointers improved to 5-0 in the WIAC earlier in the week with a 1-0 overtime win over UW-Eau Claire. Kelly
Fink (West Bend) scored 2:40 into overtime to give the Pointers the victory.
Tennis (4-4 overall, 1-3 WIAC):
UW-SP defeated Lawrence 9-0 and lost to UW-La Crosse 8-1 last week to bring its record to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in
the WIAC.
The Pointers won all nine matches in straight sets in the win over Lawrence, while the No. 2 doubles team of Rachel
Ferge (Marshfield) and Amber Wilkowski (Milwaukee) won the only match against UW-La Crosse.
UW-SP concludes its regular season this week with WIAC matches scheduled at UW-Oshkosh, Wednesday, Oct. 10, and
at home versus defending conference champion UW-Eau Claire, Friday, Oct. 12 . The WIAC Championships are set for
Oct. 20-21 in Madison.
Volleyball (5-11 overall, 1-5 WIAC):
The Pointers picked up their first WIAC victory of the season on Friday, Oct. 5, with a 30-26, 30-27, 30-19 win
over UW-Superior. UW-SP also lost matches last week to UW-Whitewater, Lakeland and UW-Eau Claire.
Kjersti Hamlin (Spring Valley, Minn.) led the Pointers with 12 kills and 20 digs in the win over UW-Superior. Nikki
Kennedy (Juneau) added 12 kills.
UW-Stevens Point lost earlier in the week to fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater 30-9, 30-16, 30-21 and to Lakeland 30-18,
30-14, 24-30, 30-12. The Pointers won the opening game against UW-Eau Claire, but fell 26-30, 30-18, 30-24, 30-28.
Kennedy had a big week for the Pointers with team-highs of 34 kills, six aces and 48 digs in the four matches.
Lucy Fisher (Appleton) had 118 assists for the week.
UW-SP hosts Marion at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, travels to Northland for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 12,
and plays a pair of matches, against UW-Superior (1 p.m.) and Concordia-St. Paul (3 p.m.), at Superior on Saturday,
Oct. 13. |
