BADGER STATE GAMES ANNOUNCE SECTIONAL LOCATIONS: The
Wisconsin Sports Development Corporation (WSDC), governing body of the Badger State Games, recently announced four
geographic sectionals that will host Summer Games qualifying competitions for the next three years (2002-2004).
The Northwest Sectional site will be Eau Claire and host to 29 counties. The Northeast
Sectional site will be Oshkosh and host to 25 counties. The Southwest Sectional site will be Platteville and host
to nine counties and the Southeast Sectional site will be Whitewater and host to nine counties.
The Badger State Games is Wisconsin's premier amateur sports festival offering
competition in 27 summer sports and ten winter sports. The Games began in 1985 and have seen more than 325,000
participants. Due to the popularity of the Games, in 1989 summer regional qualifying competitions in several sports
were added in communities around the state.
"With the population density around the state, these four sites were the natural
hubs and each of these four communities in the past have shown great support of the Badger State Games," said
Paul Costanzo, president of WSDC. "Our three-year agreements show our commitment to the athletes, volunteers
and sponsors in each sectional and will be the foundation of the continued growth and success of our games."
The four sectional sites have each hosted qualifying competitions in the past.
Eau Claire was added in 2000, Oshkosh in 1999, Whitewater in 1989 and Platteville in 1997. Recently, athletes in
Summer Games qualifying competitions have participated in basketball, track & field, soccer, golf and a ski
run. The 2002 Sectionals will be held June 14-16 and finals, held annually in Madison, are June 27-30.
