Pointer basketball teams are both undefeated
Men's basketball: The University
Wisconsin-Stevens Point improved to 6-0 overall by beating Carroll, 83-62, Viterbo, 80-73, and then sweeping through
the Badger State Challenge in Oshkosh with a 62-47 win over Edgewood and a 67-54 victory over Marian.
The Pointers, who are ranked 11th in the nation, have jumped out to their great start on the strength of outstanding
shooting. UW-SP is shooting 55 percent from the field and 47 percent from three-point range for the season.
Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) scored 24 points in the win over Marian, including 19 points during the final 12 minutes
of the first half as the Pointers used a late 13-0 run for a 40-24 halftime lead.
Jason Kalsow (Huntley, Ill.) scored 15 points in the victory over Edgewood as the Pointers blew open a close game
by scoring the last 14 points of the contest.
Against Viterbo, Iserloth notched 25 points and Kalsow added 14 points in the win as Jack Bennett won his 100th
career coaching victory.
The Pointers have two more non conference games this week, hosting Carroll at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and
visiting St. Francis of Joliet, Ill. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m.
Women's basketball (5-0 overall):
The Pointers have truly gotten off to a perfect start this season, having never trailed in any of their first five
games. UW-SP rolled past Ripon, 71-42, Carroll, 59-51, and Wisconsin Lutheran, 80-52, to improve to 5-0. The Pointers
are ranked seventh in the latest national poll.
Senior Carry Boehning (Auburndale) scored 15 points against Carroll and 16 points against Wisconsin Lutheran to
become the 10th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points. She now has 1,028 points to move into
eighth place on the all-time scoring list.
Sophomore Andrea Kraemer (Waukesha) had the best week of her two-year career with a career-best 20 points in the
win over Carroll and six assists in each game, tying her career-high. Freshman Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee) chipped
in with 15 points against Wisconsin Lutheran and seven points at Carroll.
The Pointers have a big week with three games in five days against nonconference opponents. UW-SP was scheduled
to play, Thursday, Nov. 29, at Edgewood (both games at 7 p.m.) and host Marian Saturday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m.
Men's hockey (4-5 overall, 2-2 NCHA): The
Pointers get back to action this week after taking last week off. UW-SP plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at
St. Scholastica and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at UW-Superior in a pair of NCHA contests.
The Pointers enter the week at 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the NCHA. St. Scholastica is 1-3 in the league and UW-Superior,
last year's NCAA Division III runner-up, is 1-1-1 in the NCHA.
Women's hockey: The Pointers have
a weekend off for the second straight week before resuming play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Hamline.
After the team's sweep of UW-Eau Claire on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16-17, the Pointers climbed to fourth in the
NCAA Division III rankings. UW-Stevens Point has won eight straight games.
Swimming and diving (both 3-0 in WIAC duals): The
Pointers were off last weekend and host Gustavus Adolphus in a non conference dual Saturday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m.
at the Multi-Activity Center. It is the Pointers' only home meet until Jan. 25. UW-SP swept both the men's and
women's duals from the Gusties last season.
Wrestling: UW-SP has its final open
meet at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at UW-Parkside before getting into dual meets the following week. The Pointers
have already competed at the Golden Eagle Invite and the Augsburg Open. |
