UW-SP basketball teams start season with two wins each
Men's basketball (2-0 overall):
The Pointers got off to a great start with a pair of nonconference victories last week. On Friday, Nov. 16, the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point overwhelmed Trinity International (Ill.), 90-28, and then the Pointers defeated
Coe (Iowa) 81-62 on Sunday, Nov. 18.
UW-SP, ranked 18th in the NCAA Division III rankings, has three more nonconference matchups on the road this week.
The Pointers were scheduled to travel to Viterbo at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and then play at the Challenge
tournament in Oshkosh over the weekend. The Pointers will play Edgewood at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, and Marian
at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 25.
Junior Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) had 16 points in Friday's win as the Pointers fell one point short of the biggest
victory margin in school history. The 28 points allowed tied the school record for the best defensive performance,
matching the mark set against UW-Milwaukee on Nov. 30, 1983.
Freshman Jason Kalsow (Huntley) had 18 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's win as the Pointers led by as many
as 31 points in the second half. Iserloth added 17 points and Ron Nolting (Preston, Iowa) had 12 points on four-for-four
three-point shooting.
Women's basketball (2-0 overall):
UW-SP started the season by winning the Terry Porter Tipoff Tournament for the second straight year with victories
over Lawrence 84-42 and Upper Iowa 77-58.
Senior Kari Groshek (Rosholt) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for the second straight year and
has been selected to the all-tournament team every year in the tournament's five-year history. Groshek was injured
after the 1999 tournament and earned a medical redshirt.
Groshek, a preseason second-team All-American, had 26 points in the championship game victory, including 20 in
the second half. She also led the team with 13 points in just 15 minutes against Lawrence.
Sophomore Cassandra Heuer (Two Rivers) had 15 rebounds in the two games to earn the tournament's top rebounder
award and a spot on the all-tournament team. Senior Amie Schultz (Appleton) was also an all-tournament selection.
The Pointers were scheduled to play at Carroll at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and then host Wisconsin Lutheran
on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. in Berg Gym.
Cross country: Becky Lebak (Burlington)
finished seventh overall to earn All-American status as the women's cross country team finished 17th at the NCAA
Division III Championship meet in Rock Island, Ill. on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Pointer women finished with 363 team
points.
Lebak completed the course in 17:26. Kara Vosters (Little Chute) was the Pointers' next highest finisher, placing
38th in 18:03, while Megan Craig (Mindoro) contributed an 89th place finish in 18:29.
On the men's side, UW-SP placed 18th overall. James Levash (Brillion) was the Pointer men's top place winner, finishing
in 77th place in a time of 25:34. Mark LaLonde (Park Falls) was just behind Levash, crossing the finish line one
second later in 79th place. Jesse LaLonde (Park Falls) ranked third amongst Pointer runners, placing 108th in 25:52.
It was the Pointer women's third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships and their 11th overall. UW-SP's
men competed in the meet for the fifth time in six years and their 15th all-time appearance. UW-La Crosse won the
men's national title.
Women's hockey (7-0 overall, 2-0
NCHA) The Pointers stayed red-hot with a weekend sweep of UW-Eau Claire to open their NCHA season. UW-SP won Friday,
Nov. 16, 6-2 and then won Saturday, Nov. 17, 5-3, scoring all five goals in the third period.
UW-SP, which is ranked fifth in the country, will take the next two weekends off before traveling to Hamline on
Dec. 4 for a 6:30 p.m. game.
Freshman Ann Ninnemann (Rosemount, Minn.) had three goals and one assist on Friday for the third Pointer hat trick
of the season. She also had the team's first goal in Saturday's third period rally.
Freshmen Emily Teachout (Edina, Minn.) and Kim Chenery (Forest Lake, Minn.) scored goals in each game for the Pointers,
who are riding an eight-game winning streak, dating to last season. The Pointers are now 6-0 all-time against UW-Eau
Claire.
Swimming and diving (both 3-0 in
WIAC duals): The Pointer men's team captured the WIAC relays title, while the women's team was second behind UW-La
Crosse, snapping their string of back-to-back relays titles.
The men's team had 144 points, while UW-La Crosse was second with 106 points. The women's team had 134 points to
fall just short of the Eagles' 150 points. No individual results are available due to a computer problem in La
Crosse.
UW-Stevens Point will take this week off and return to action with a home dual against Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday,
Dec. 1.
Wrestling: Nathan Preslaski (Pulaski)
finished second at 157 pounds to lead the Pointers at the Augsburg Open on Saturday, Nov. 17. Preslaski, ranked
seventh in the country, won three straight matches before being pinned by sixth-ranked Jeremy Jirele of Augsburg
in the title match.
Yan White (Antigo) was third at 197 pounds, posting two pins and a major decision victory. His only loss was a
4-3 decision to third-ranked Kevin Rasmussen of Augsburg.
Mark Burger (Merrill) was third at heavyweight, posting a pin and a major decision win, while suffering his only
loss in overtime in the semifinals.
Brady Holtz (Oconto Falls) was also fourth at 133 pounds in the Gold Division.
The Pointers will take this weekend off before competing at the UW-Parkside Open on Saturday, Dec. 1. |
