Pointer cross country teams take third at WIAC Championships
Cross Country: Becky Lebak (Burlington) won the WIAC women's individual
title with a time of 18:00, giving the Pointers their second consecutive women's individual winner after Leah Juno
won last year's meet.
Both the Pointer men's and women's teams placed third at this year's WIAC championships in Eau Claire. UW-La Crosse
won both titles and UW-Oshkosh was second in both races.
Mark LaLonde (Park Falls) was sixth overall in the men's race with a time of 25:05 to earn all-conference honors.
Kara Vosters (Little Chute) was the next-highest finisher for the women's team, placing 10th in 18:48.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will take this week off before running in the NCAA Division III Midwest
Regional Saturday, Nov. 10, in Rock Island, Ill.
Football (5-2 overall, 3-2 WIAC):
The Pointers picked up a key 34-24 win Saturday over UW-Stout to put themselves in position for an NCAA Division
III playoff berth heading into their final two games.
UW-SP can clinch at least a tie for the WIAC title and the league's automatic playoff berth by winning at UW-Platteville
this Saturday, Nov. 3, and beating UW-Eau Claire at home on Saturday, Nov. 10. UW-SP, UW-Platteville and UW-La
Crosse are all tied at 3-2 in second place in the WIAC, while UW-Eau Claire leads the league at 4-1.
The Pointers got off to a quick start against UW-Stout, jumping out to a 27-3 halftime lead.
Scott Krause (Waunakee) rushed for two first half touchdowns, including a 42-yarder on the second play of the game.
Krause also threw touchdown passes to Ross Adamczak (Stevens Point) and Steve Jones (Stevens Point) in the final
two minutes of the half.
Senior Lance Gast (Weston) rushed for a career-high 141 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown run in the fourth
quarter that gave the Pointers a 34-17 lead.
The Pointers are playing at UW-Platteville this week for the second time this season, marking the first time they've
ever played two away games at the same site in one season. UW-SP won the first meeting 51-13 on Sept. 22.
Men's Hockey (1-1 overall): The
Pointers split a nonconference series against Elmira (N.Y.) last weekend in preparation for this weekend's NCHA
openers at UW-Stout and UW-River Falls.
UW-SP lost Friday's opening game 6-3 after the Soaring Eagles scored the game-winner with 11:14 left and then added
two goals in the final 1:19 of the game. The Pointers bounced back on Saturday with a 5-2 win.
Ryan Feil (Orland Park) scored goals in each game for the Pointers, while Mike Brolsma (Appleton) scored two goals
in Saturday's victory. Four of the Pointers' six goal-scorers during the weekend scored their first career goals.
The Pointers were solid on special teams as well, scoring power play goals in each game and holding Elmira to 0-for-13
on the power play in the two games. Ryan Scott (Plover) made 22 saves in Saturday's game.
The Pointers play at UW-Stout at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, and at UW-River Falls on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7:05
p.m.
Women's Hockey: The second varsity
season of Pointer women's hockey opens Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, with a two-game series against St. Thomas
at Willett Arena. Friday's game is at 5:35 p.m. and Saturday's game is at 2:35 p.m.
UW-SP has seven players back from last season's team that finished third in the NCHA and was 13-13-1 overall. The
Pointers welcome 15 new players and a new coach in Brian Idalski to this year's roster.
Soccer (17-1 overall, 8-0 WIAC): It
was another historic week for the Pointers, who captured their ninth WIAC tournament title in 10 years, clinched
their eighth NCAA tournament berth in nine years and won their NCAA record-tying 55th consecutive conference match.
The 55 straight conference wins tie the all-divisions NCAA record held by North Carolina, which won 55 straight
in the Atlantic Coast Conference from 1994-2000.
UW-SP opens NCAA tournament play Friday, Nov. 2, at Wheaton, Ill. against the winner of Wednesday's match between
Webster (Mo.) and Edgewood. With a victory, the Pointers would play for the regional title on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Wheaton plays either St. Thomas (Minn.) or Loras (Iowa) in its first match.
The Pointers beat UW-Platteville 6-0 in the quarterfinals, then topped UW-Whitewater 3-0 in the semifinals and
beat UW-Eau Claire 1-0 in the title game. UW-SP enters the NCAA tournament having won eight straight matches and
outscoring opponents 32-1 over the span.
Mickey Jacob (Neenah) scored the only goal of the championship game, marking the third straight year she has scored
or assisted on the winning goal in the WIAC title match. Jenny Bruce (Menasha) assisted on the game-winner, tying
a WIAC tournament record with five assists during the week. Brianna Hyslop (Madison) made six saves in the title
match.
Swimming and diving (both teams 1-0 in WIAC duals): The
Pointer men's team ran its WIAC dual meet winning streak to 29 straight, while the women's team was also victorious
Saturday at UW-Oshkosh. The men won 142-93, while the women won 138-101.
Peter Nowak (New Berlin) won the 1000 freestyle in 10:49.51 and the 500 freestyle in 5:09.55 to lead the men's
team. Erik Johnson (Albert Lea) also won the 50 freestyle in 22.70 and was on the winning 400 medley relay in 3:47.21.
On the women's side, Christine Sammons (Hastings\) won the 400 medley in 4:54.66 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.51.
She also was a member of the winning 400 medley relay in 4:14.00.
The Pointers will compete in two more WIAC duals Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3. Their home opener is Friday at
6 p.m. against UW-Eau Claire. They will also travel to UW-Whitewater on Saturday for a 1 p.m. meet.
Volleyball (8-18 overall, 1-7 WIAC): The
Pointers season ended Tuesday, Oct. 30, with a 30-26, 30-17, 30-18, loss to UW-Oshkosh in the quarterfinals of
the WIAC tournament.
UW-SP finished 2-2 at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational over the weekend.
The Pointers lost their final WIAC match of the season on Wednesday at UW-La Crosse 30-17, 30-21, 30-26. UW-SP
then opened the UW-Oshkosh tournament with a 30-23, 30-28, 30-24 loss to Marian and a 30-14, 30-19, 30-14 win over
Finlandia. On Saturday, the Pointers lost to UW-Oshkosh 30-20, 30-23, 30-18 before beating Ripon 29-31, 30-23,
30-20, 15-30, 15-13 for their first five-game victory of the season.
Chrissy Klipstine (Denmark) had only four hitting errors with 41 kills in 107 hitting attempts during the five
matches. Lucy Fisher (Appleton) averaged 10.9 assists per game and was named to the all-tournament team at UW-Oshkosh.
Jessica Parker had 53 kills in the five matches and Nikki Kennedy (Juneau) had 48 kills for the week. |
