The Week in Review

SPASH

Boys basketball: The Panthers advanced with a 43-37 victory over Manitowoc Thursday, improving their record to 12-9. The Panthers will host Oshkosh West in the SPASH fieldhouse at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3.
Girls basketball: The Panthers remained unbeaten, improving their record to 22-0 with a victory Saturday, Feb. 23, against Oshkosh West, 41-35, at Waupaca.
Gymnastics: Three Panther gymnasts qualified for the State Gymnastics Tournament, but the team fell .075 points short of doing so Thursday at the Neenah sectional.

"You never realize how much one point is until you lose by less than one," said Panther coach Mary Olszewski. "The girls knew it was close and they pulled together and fought hard until the last girl landed her vault," she said.

The Panthers scored 138.750, but Sheboygan scored 138.825 to qualify ahead of SPASH for the meet. Neenah-Menasha won the sectional with a score of 142.875. Only the top two teams and top five individuals advance to state.

Qualifying for the Panthers for the state meet on Friday are Jenna Weinbauer, who was second in the balance beam event with a score of 9.000; Anne Simonis who was second in the uneven bars with a score of 9.150 and Kaity Munsey who was fifth in the bars with a score of 8.925.

The Panthers had several gymnasts who were also close to qualifying as individuals. Munsey was sixth in the beam, Raenee Bugarske was ninth in vaulting, Munsey was sixth and Bugarske was seventh in the floor exercise, and Kim Klosno was sixth in the bars.

In all around, where the top three finishers advance to state, Munsey was fifth and Bugarske was 10th.

"Practice will continue as usual this week," Olszewski said after the sectional. "The team will cheer on Kaity, Jenna and Anne on Friday night when they compete for individual awards."
Wrestling: Josh Calhoun took sixth place in the 112-pound class at the State Wrestling Meet. He won his first match, then dropped his second before coming back in the wrestlebacks.

Grey Pope at 160 pounds and Josh Beyerl at 189 pounds lost their first matches in the meet.

Pacelli

Boys basketball: The Cardinals dropped a 59-51 decision to Amherst on Friday. Ben Greuel led the Cardinals with 20 points while Jake Owens and Jason Lepak each had 11.

The Cardinals opened tournament play with a victory over Rosholt. (See page 12.)

Wrestling: Pacelli's Greg Snow finished sixth in the 152-pound weight class at the State Wrestling Meet Saturday. Snow is the first Pacelli athlete to place at a WIAA event.

"It's special," said Cardinal coach Jay Yenter. "We put some kids through our program and they didn't get a lot of respect. Now we can say we have a placewinner."

"I'm really excited," said Snow. "I set some high goals for myself at the beginning of the year. I thought I was good enough to get in. I'm just happy that I did. It's a lot different than the WISAA tournament. It was more intimidating coming into the new stadium. After a while you just get used to it."

Amherst

Boys basketball: The Falcons closed out the regular season with a 59-51 victory over Pacelli Friday.

Pacelli jumped out to a 15-3 lead after the first quarter but the Falcons came back to knot the score at half, 20-20, then grabbed a 37-36 lead at the three-quarters mark.

"The things that got us back in the game and the lead were things we talked about doing before we played," said Falcon coach Gregg Jensen. "We can't put ourselves in a hole like we did before we woke up. Nic Genske did a nice job and Tim Olson had some good spells."

Jesse Konkol led the Falcons with 17 points and eight rebounds. Nic Genske had 13 points and six rebounds and Jeremy Sherf added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Falcons season came to an end Tuesday as they lost to Auburndale, 58-48. The Falcons had a 17-4 record.

Girls basketball: The Falcons beat Bonduel Thursday, Feb. 22, 45-39.
The Falcons defeated Iola-Scandinavia, 67-53, Saturday night. They are scheduled to face Markesan at 7 p.m. Friday in Markesan.

Almond-Bancroft

Boys basketball: The Eagles lost to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 62-43, in the first round of the state tournament Tuesday.
Girls basketball: The Eagles dropped a 51-39 decision to Manawa Thursday in a subregional semifinal. The Eagles were 11-11 this season.

Rosholt

Boys basketball: The Hornets lost their opening game in tournament play to Pacelli on Tuesday. (See page 12.)
Girls basketball: The Hornets lost a 60-52 decision to Iola-Scandinavia in the second round of action in the state tournament Thursday. The Hornets finished the season at 19-3.

Wrestling: Hornet sophomore Casey Giese dropped his initial match at 103 pounds in the State Wrestling Meet in Madison on Friday. He wound up with a 26-16 record for the year.

"Casey is a quality wrestler and has proven abilities," said Hornet coach Alan Carter. "His qualification, along with 11 other Division III wrestlers for the state tournament says exactly that. As he matures as a wrestler, he'll only get better."

Carter said he congratulates Giese and the rest of the school's wrestlers on their achievements and hard work, while also wishing the seniors well. Graduating from the team are Tom Stanislawski at 275 pounds, Tom Van De Yacht at 119 and Willie Van De Yacht at 125. "Their experience and leadership will be missed," Carter said.
