Pointers find success on annual spring trip

The Pointers wrapped up their spring trip with an 8-3 record, though two of the three losses came to teams ranked in the top five of the country.

UW-SP also posted wins over fourth-ranked Allegheny (Pa.) and 15th-ranked Rowan (N.J.). Six of the Pointers' eight wins were come-from-behind victories.

UW-SP hopes to get back to action this weekend with four home games, weather permitting. The Pointers will host Marian, an NCAA tournament participant from last season, on Saturday and then Northland on Sunday. Both doubleheaders start at noon.

Softball

The season has started impressively for the Pointers as they posted an 8-1 mark on the spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla., outscoring opponents, 48-15. UW-SP's Nicki Bertram (Marion) was 4-0, while Karen Guckeberger (South Milwaukee) was 4-1 with three saves. Her only loss came despite a two-hitter in a 2-0 decision to North Central (Ill.). Guckenberger also pitched her first career no-hitter in a win over Division II Franklin Pierce (N.H.). Bertram fired a one-hitter in a win over Aurora (Ill.).

The Pointers are scheduled to open their northern slate on Friday when they travel to Concordia (Wis.) for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
