SPASH Special Sports Soccer team earns bronze medal

Every member of the Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) Special Sports Soccer Team was awarded a bronze medal in last weekend's Special Olympics Summer Games, which were held in Stevens Point.

In the round robin tournament, SPASH's Special Sports - Red team had two wins and two losses.

In game one the Wausheaa Rockets beat the SPASH - Red team, 3-2, in a sudden death overtime playoff with Becky Disher scoring the only two goals for SPASH.

In game two SPASH - Red team rebounded by defeating the West Bend Reckers with a 6-0 win. Rachel Cooney, Stacey Trzebiatowski and Joe Sosnowski put in solid defensive efforts, contributing to the shutout.

A strong offensive attack by the La Crosse Goalies defeated SPASH - Red team, 6-2, in game 3.

The team again faced the West Bend Reckers, defeating them, 6-1, to take the bronze medal. Nicole Lurasavage score the Red teams only goal in the first half while Nick "Golden Toe" Cousineau (2), Becky Disher (2) and Dustin Thede combined for five goals in the second half.

Dick Jones, SPASH head coach, said the team focused on having fun throughout the games and that winning came second.
