Stevens Point Legion baseball off to rough start
The Stevens Point American Legion Post 6 baseball team (Sixers) is off to a rough start this season. On Thursday,
June 14, play was suspended because of rain in the seventh inning, in Wausau, with the score deadlocked at 3-3.
The game will be finished when Wausau comes to Point.
Friday, June 14, the Sixers were swept by La Crosse, 10-0, and, 12-3, in a doubleheader.
"We were not ready to play against La Crosse, I think some of our kids were a little intimidated, I don't
know why but that seemed to be the case" said Tom Drohner, Sixers manager.
On Tuesday, June 19, the Sixers lost to Rothschild-Schofield-Weston (RSW), 3-1.
The team had a chance to win it in the seventh inning, with runners on second and third with two outs, but was
unable to drive in the runs. Lance Rick was the winning pitcher for RSW, while Jesse Nagorski took the loss for
Stevens Point.
"We played well enough to win, however, we couldn't get anyone to step up
in key situations, Drohner said. "We had some opportunities, but give them credit, they got the big hit with
two outs and we didn't."
The Sixers are 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the Valley conference this year.
Still, Drohner is confident that his team can still pull together. "I still maintain that by the end of the
year we will be tough to contend with. We have some very good young talent who just need some time to grow a little,"
he said.
The Sixers have only four players on the roster from last year's team.
The Stevens Point team includes Brad Heeg (INF), Jesse Nagorski (INF/P), Eric Shipferling (INF/P), Brent Speckman
(INF/P), Chris Jacobson (INF/P), Jake Jahnke (INF), Justin Pezewski (OF/P), Andrew Sherer (OF/P), Randy Printz
(C/OF), Josh Przekurat (C/OF), Eric Napowicki (OF/P), Jeff Herzog (INF), Dan Yudchitz (INF/OF/P), Tony Devivo (C/OF)
and Zach Larson (OF).
