Leah Juno (Brillion) became the first female in University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point history to win back-to-back NCAA Division III outdoor track and field individual championships in the same event by capturing the 800 meters title Saturday, May 26, in Decatur, Ill.
The UW-Stevens Point men's team had its highest finish in school history at third place overall with 34 points. The Pointers placed fourth at the indoor championships earlier this season.
Juno had a time of 2:11.97 to edge Ohio Wesleyan's Stephanie Moss, who finished second in 2:12.36. It was the third straight national championship victory for the senior, who also won the 800 meters at the Division III indoor championships earlier this season.
Juno's finish helped the Pointer women's team finish 13th overall in the team standings with 17 points. Juno was also named the Division III Midwest Regional outdoor Athlete of the Year. Head coach Len Hill was named the region's Coach of the Year.
Jesse Drake (Rhinelander) finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:52.62, trailing Frostburg State's Michael Taye, who won in 14:51.36.
Chris Horvat (Menomonee Falls) was attempting to win his second 800 meters title this season, but finished fifth.
Craig Gunderson (Waupaca) finished fifth in the 400 meters and Aaron Carley (Lodi) was sixth in the triple jump, both earned All-American honors.
Other top finishers from the first two days of the meet were Joel Schult (Merrill), who was sixth in the discus and Jeremiah Rolfs (Wild Rose), who was seventh in the discus. Drake was fourth in the 10,000 meters and Shane Suehring (Marion) was fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase.
Becky Lebak (Burlington) was fourth in the 10,000 meters and Jenny Todd (Wisconsin Rapids) was seventh in the long jump.
