Weix named new wrestling coach at Pacelli

Bob Weix, an assistant coach and former wrestler at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, will take over the Pacelli wrestling program, Athletic Director Terry Owens has announced. He will also be a member of the Pacelli football coaching staff.

Weix replaces Jay Yenter, who wrestled for Pacelli as a high school student-athlete, was an assistant coach under Greg Flees for 10 seasons for the Cardinals, and served as the team's head coach for the past two seasons.

"I want to thank Jay Yenter for his commitment to Pacelli wrestling and Pacelli High School on the whole," said Owens . "His work on our coaching staff since 1990 has helped raise the program to the level of respect it now enjoys and will continue to enjoy. He gave up a lot to do this job over the years but his efforts will show for many years down the road."

Yenter will continue to work with the Pacelli youth wrestling part of the program.

Weix wrestled for UW-SP under Marty Loy and Johnny Johnson before stepping into a coaching role. As a wrestler for the Pointers, he compiled 50-plus career wins while finishing in the top three at the WIAC Championships twice. As a high school wrestler at Merrill, he was a state runner-up as a senior while putting together a 36-3 record and being named the team MVP.

"Bob is a detail-oriented person who brings some real practical experience to the program," said Owens. "His experiences as a collegiate wrestler at one of the top Division III programs in the nation as well as his success at the high school level will translate well the commitment needed to reach the highest level. Learning the coaching profession under two well-respected head coaches at UW-SP gives him the tools he needs to succeed. He will do a great job for us."

"I'm excited for this opportunity," said Weix. "We've got a young squad but I think that works to my advantage as a new coach. They'll know right from the start that we're going to work hard and, regardless of their experience, they will give everything they've got in every match."

Weix's first match as Pacelli head coach will come on Thursday, Nov. 29, when the Cardinals host Auburndale at the Pacelli Student Activity Center.
