Amherst golf team earns trip to state

The Amherst golf team placed second at the WIAA Sectional Golf Tournament, Division 3, on May 29, at the Nicolet Golf Course in Laona, Wis.

The second-place finish qualifies them for the WIAA State Golf tournament at University Ridge in Madison on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 4-5. The final scores were Wrightstown, 303; Amherst, 307; Manawa, 324 and Pembine, 328.

Amherst had failed to qualify for state in the last two years in their first two times at sectionals.

Amherst's Brian Pionkowski was the medallist with a 72. Teammate Jeremy Sherf had a 73. Matt Clinton and Andy Harvey both shot an 81, with teammate Jeff Cloninger adding an 83.

Amherst golf coach Pete Sippel said he liked the team's chances at state. "If the players can just hit their averages at Madison, the team will be in contention for the top spot in the state," he said.
