YMCA/Copps Triathlon breaks participation record

The 13th Annual YMCA/Copps Triathlon drew a record 510 participants competing in long- or short-course.

The long-course consisted of a half-mile swim, a 25-mile bike ride and a 10K run. The short-course includes a quarter-mile run, a 15-mile bike ride and a 5K run. There was also a KidsTri.

Participants came mostly from Wisconsin, but some competitors came from across the country to take part in the event. Most out-of-state entrants came from Minnesota and Illinois, but a few came from as far away as Oregon, Virginia and Texas.

Long Course male results: Michael Bloomer of Delafield took first with a time of 1 hour, 51 minutes and 29 seconds; Rod Raymond, Duluth, Minn., took second in 1:51:29; Roy Milsen, Menomonee Falls, took third in 1:55:04.

Todd Williams was the top local finisher, taking 45th with a time of 2:14:43. Other local participants and their places were: Ken Pepowski, Stevens Point, 51; Tom O'Malley, Stevens Point, 72; Brian Earnest, Plover, 74; Stephen Taft, Stevens Point, 75; Todd Jirous, Stevens Point, 76; Steven McClaren, Stevens Point, 81; Michael Aavang, Stevens Point, 84; John Bailiff, Stevens Point, 85; Bill Taugner, Junction City, 95; Rachel Herder, Junction City, 100; and Scott Rassbach, Stevens Point, 102.

Long Course female results: Kerry Ham, Wausau, took first place with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 36 seconds; Kelly Delany, New Berlin took second in 2:08:59; and Katie Siporski, Milwaukee, finished third in 2:14:48.

Katie Ziehr, Plover, was the top local finisher, placing 17th, in 2:34:20. Roberta Johnston, Plover finished 29.

Short Course male results: Will Smith, Madison, finished first with a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 3 seconds; Greg Carter, Hubertus, took second in 1:07:52; and Rick Flayter, West Allis, finished third in 1:08:14.
Nick Langer, Stevens Point, was the top local competitor finishing in 18th place with a time of 1:13:17. Other local participants and their places were: Michael Heidke, Stevens Point, 21; John Todd, Plover, 26; David Bart, Amherst, 31; Shaun Sullivan, Plover, 54; Chad Behnke, Stevens Point, 59.

Short Course female results: Sonya Eggen, Appleton, took first in a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes and 6 seconds; Nicky Rolls, Appleton, came in second in 1:12:42; and Erica Busse, Waukesha, took third in a 1:17:55.

Kimberly Kuphal, Stevens Point, was the top local finisher, taking 12th with a time of 1:22:14. Kids Junior male results: Anthony Jagielo, Almond, took first in 18 minutes, 59 seconds; Thomas Butler, Madison, came in second in 20:14; and Thomas Trione, Wausau, took third in 20:30.

Tommy Johnson, Stevens Point took sixth.

Kids Senior female results: Whitney Isenhart, Green Bay, took first in 31 minutes, 26 seconds; Emma Tauchman, Stevens Point, finished second in 31:51; and Kara Tauchman, Stevens Point came in third in 32:01.

Other local participants and their places were: Sharisa Hillstead, Stevens Point, 5; Danielle Alinea, Mosinee, 6; Brittney Hodgson, Plover, 12; and Sarah Weyenberg, Plover, 13.

Kids Senior male results: Nicholas Wolff, Sturgeon Bay finished first in 30 minutes, 8 seconds; Brandon Busse, Stevens Point, took second in 30:30; and Chris Champeau, Green Bay, took third in 30:34.

Other local participants and their places were: Bennett Meier, Plover, 8; and David Derber, Plover, 13.

Relay results: Ten teams competed in the relay event. Are We Done Yet? finished first in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 12 seconds; Jamida finished second in 2:10:49; and Larojo finished third in 2:13:40. Names of the individual team members were not available.
