Plover-Whiting baseball teams excel at SPYBA tournament

Two Plover-Whiting teams captured second place in tournaments for 14-year-olds and 15-year-olds sponsored by the Stevens Point Youth Baseball Association Friday through Sunday, July 6-8.

The P-W 14-year-olds dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Park Ridge, Ill., in the championship game. The P-W team led 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but a two-run triple ended the game.

The Plover team had won its first three games, defeating Stevens Point, 8-2, on Friday, Bayport, 14-1, and De Pere, 7-4, on Saturday.

That set up the championship match with Park Ridge, which came into the game with a 3-0 record, having defeated Stevens Point, 4-2, Bayport, 11-1, and De Pere, 10-3.

De Pere finished at 2-2, with victories over Bayport, 2-1, and Stevens Point, 24-2.

The host Stevens Point was 1-3, notching a 10-1 win over Bayport, which finished at 0-4.

In the tourney for 15-year-olds, both P-W and Neenah finished with 3-1 records but Neenah won the title because of a 12-11 victory over P-W Sunday morning in a game called in the sixth inning because of the time limit.

Neenah's loss was a 6-5 decision to De Pere. Neenah also defeated Stevens Point, 7-4, and Bayport, 3-0.

Plover-Whiting defeated Stevens Point, 10-4, De Pere, 9-3, and Bayport, 14-3. Jason Pezewski had 16 strikeouts in the De Pere game for Plover-Whiting.

Stevens Point finished 1-3 in the tourney, beating De Pere, 11-8, but losing to Bayport, 8-6.

De Pere was 2-2 in the tourney, beating Bayport, 5-2. Bayport was also 1-3.
