Two state champions among UW-SP wrestling recruits
A pair of state champions lead the 2001 recruiting class for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP)
wrestling team.
Cody Koenig, an Underwood, Iowa, native who registered a 188-19 career record and finished as the second-winningest
wrestler in Iowa High School history, leads the class of 2001 recruits. Koenig finished 47-0 as a senior and captured
the Class 1 A state title.
The Pointers also landed a Wisconsin state champion in Kaukauna's Justin Geitner, who won the Division 1 state
title at 140 pounds and finished 41-2 as a senior. Geitner was 35-7 as a junior and posted a 141-20 career record.
Joel and Jon Burdick brothers from Racine Park High School, will also join the Pointers after posting identical
seasons as seniors. Both wrestlers finished 42-4 overall and placed fifth at the Division 1 state meet. Jon, who
was fifth at 125 pounds, was also sixth at 119 pounds as a junior, and was 140-22 for his career. Joel was fifth
at 134 pounds and finished 115-15 for his career.
Also planning to attend UW-SP is Bloomer's Ed Wynimko, who was second at state in Division 2 as a junior at 145
pounds and finished 30-5 that season.
David Davila, a 125-pounder from Chicago, who was an Illinois freestyle state champion and posted 120 career wins,
also intends to wrestle for the Pointers.
UW-SP has added a pair of transfers from UW-Whitewater in Bill Verbeten and Shad Loch. Verbeten, a Wrightstown
native, was a Division 3 state quarterfinalist at 125 pounds in 2000 and finished 36-6 overall. He also was a member
of the Tigers' 1999 state title team. Loch, a Bay Port High School graduate, was fourth at state at 152 pounds
in 2000 with a 24-8 record. |
