Pointer men's team retains share of second

UW-Stevens Point retained a share of second place in the WIAC Wednesday, defeating UW Superior, 65-56.

The victory improved the Pointers record to 5-3 in the WIAC and 13-3 overall. Entering the contest, the Pointers were part of a five-way tie for second.

The Pointers hit 10 of their first 12 shots from the field and took a 26-14 lead before Superior closed the first half with a 16-3 run over the last seven minutes to hold a 30-29 halftime lead.

The Pointers led 49-47 with nine minutes left when Neal Krajnik (Manitowoc) hit back-to-back jumpers to spark an 8-1 run. UW-SP scored its last 10 points from line and did not score a field goal in the last 7:50 of the game.

Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) led the Pointers with 23 points and Kalonji Kadima (Milwaukee) added 10.

The Pointers rebounded after falling at UW-Oshkosh Saturday, 85-76. The Titans came back from nine down at intermission by outscoring the Pointers, 60-42, in the second half. Kadima scored 21 points in the loss.

Women's Basketball

The Pointers also defeated Superior, 88-51, Wednesday, improving their record to 12-4 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC.

The Pointers took a 39-27 halftime lead and added to the margin in the second half.

Kari Groshek (Rosholt) led the way with 21 points, Carry Boehning (Auburndale) and Cassandra Heuer each added 12 and Tara Schmitt (Waukesha) had 11.

The Pointers lost Saturday, 72-62, to WIAC leader UW-Oshkosh, which is ranked fourth in the country.

Groshek had 23 points against the Titans, and the Pointers shot 54 percent from the field, but were unable to hold off the Titans. Schmitt added 16 points for the Pointers, who led 45-44 with 10 minutes left before the Titans scored the next 11 points.

UW-SP looks to get back into the WIAC title chase Saturday when it hosts UW-Stout at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Pointers lost a two-point game at UW-Stout earlier this season.

Men's Hockey

The Pointers¸ 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the NCHA, host a pair of NCHA games this weekend as St. Scholastica and UW-Superior visit Willett Arena. UW-Stevens Point is tied for fourth with UW-Superior in the NCHA standings with six points.

The Pointers split a series with St. Norbert last weekend, falling 3-1 at home, but winning 4-3 at St. Norbert. Senior David Boehm (Eau Claire) and junior Bryan Fricke (Edina, Minn.) each scored two goals in Saturday's win as Boehm scored the fastest two goals by one player in school history, scoring just 17 seconds apart in the second period. Fricke scored the first two power play goals of his career, including the game-winner with 2:47 left in the game.

Matt Interbartolo (Toronto, Ont.) scored the lone goal on Friday and added three assists on Saturday. The senior forward currently leads the NCHA and is among the nation's leaders in assists. The Pointers held St. Norbert to zero-for-10 on the power play for the weekend.

Women's Hockey

UW-SP recorded its first victories against an established varsity program, sweeping two games from UW-River Falls, which was ranked ninth in the country and is in its second year as a varsity program.

The victories, by identical 3-1 scores, lifted UW-SP into second place in the NCHA. The Pointers can assure themselves of a berth in the first-ever NCHA playoffs with one victory this weekend at Lake Forest.

Diane Sawyer (Stillwater, Minn.) stopped 54 of 56 shots for the weekend to earn NCHA Player of the Week honors as the Pointers have captured the award in three of six weeks this season. Nicole Busse (Stevens Point) scored three of the six goals against UW-River Falls.

The Pointers are 8-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the NCHA and return to action Friday and Saturday at Lake Forest.

Swimming And Diving

The swimmers are back in action this weekend when they host the annual Get to the Point Invite at the Multi-Activity Center. The event features several of the top Division II and III schools in the Midwest and begins with preliminaries both Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. Finals begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Indoor Track And Field

The women's team opens its season Friday, Jan. 19, at the UW-River Falls Invite.

The Pointer men's team opened its season at the UW-Madison Badger Invite last weekend and was led by Mike Mead (Neenah), who captured the high jump title. Mead, the defending Division III champion in the event, won with a leap of 6-feet, 10.25 inches. Other top performances were Jesse Drake (Rhinelander), who was second in the 3,000 meters in 8:23.88, Chris Horvat (Menomonee Falls), who was second in the 800 meters in 1:56.86, and Joel Schult (Merrill), who was second in the shot put with 49-feet, 10.5 inches.

Wrestling

The Pointer wrestling team dropped its opening match, but won the final eight decisions Wednesday to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 33-12, in a WIAC dual match.

After the Titans won by pin at 149 pounds to open the night, the Pointers received a major decision from Nathan Preslaski at 157 pounds and a pin from Nathan Ugoretz at 165 pounds to take a 10-6 lead. Wes Kapping recorded a technical fall at 174 pounds and Ben Kureck won at 184 pounds to increase the lead to 18-6.

Mitch Gehring added a pin at heavyweight and, following a forfeit at 125 pounds, Brady Holtz and Chet Zdanczewicz both had wins at 133 and 141, respectively to give the Pointers a 30-12 lead. Yan White finished the night with a 4-1 victory at 197 pounds in the Quandt Fieldhouse at halftime of the men's basketball game.

The Pointers, who are ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III, are now 5-3 overall and travel to fourth-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) Saturday for a dual match. Wartburg has finished first or second at the last five national championships.
