Two Pacelli wrestlers capture conference titles
Two Pacelli wrestlers captured titles in the Central Wisconsin Conference Saturday at Rosholt, but Rosholt and
Amherst fared better in the final conference standings.
Tim Schwarz won the 130 title with a 9-7 decision over Jeff Konkol of Wittenberg-Birnamwood, and Greg Snow won
the 152 title with an 11-5 decision over Jesse Staerkel of Wild Rose.
Three Rosholt wrestlers finished second, Casey Giese at 103, Tom Van De Yacht at 119 and Willie Van De Yacht at
125.
Nate Peplinski of Amherst also took second place, at 160.
In the final 2001 conference standings, Weyauwega Fremont was first with 36 points, Wittenberg-Birnamwood was second
with 32, Manawa third with 26, Rosholt fourth with 22, Bonduel fifth with 20, Amherst sixth with 15 and Pacelli
seventh with 12. Shiocton, Tri-County and Wild Rose rounded out the conference.
Cardinal coach Jay Yenter praised his conference champs.
"Tim Schwarz put it all together," he said. "Because of injury he hadn't had very many matches.
He dominated in the first two rounds and won a hard-fought finals match. He improved his record to 13-2 on the
year. When Tim wrestles like he did today, he's very hard to beat."
Yenter said Snow didn't have anyone to challenge him. "He's been getting a lot more offensive on his feet.
In the matches that he lost this year, he's been very defensive. He's now 24-5 on the year and is wrestling very
well. He has to keep rolling right into regionals."
Yenter said he felt his squad had a good tournament and maybe should have won two more matches, although some wrestlers
pulled upsets. "A lot of our young guys had tough draws, but they battled their way back through the consolation
bracket.
"We finished the day with an overall record above .500 and placed seven wrestlers, with five freshmen in the
line up. That's a good day."
Besides Schwarz and Snow, Justin Anderson was fourth at 160 with a 2-1 mark, Jamie Klein finished fifth at 112
with a 3-1 record and Simon Hesch was fifth at 145 with a 2-1 record.
Sixth places went to Nathan Werra at 103 and Colin Zinda at 119.
