Boys basketball: The Panthers beat Merrill, Friday, Jan. 26. (See "Game of the Week.")

The Panthers lost a 59-56 decision to Wisconsin Rapids Tuesday, Jan. 30. SPASH had taken a 28-26 halftime lead. The loss dropped the Panthers to 4-7 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and 6-9 overall.

Girls basketball: The Panthers defeated the Bluejays, 49-33 Friday.
On Tuesday, the Panthers defeated Wisconsin Rapids, 54-24, improving their record to 14-0 overall and 11-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

Gymnastics: The Panthers recorded their highest score of the season, 138.575, to defeat Rhinelander, which recorded a score of 107.275 in a dual meet at SPASH on Thursday, Jan. 25.

"The scores are getting higher and reaching our goal is in sight," Panther coach Mary Olszewski said. "We finally are improving our vault score."

Panthers captured the first three places in every event.

In the vault, Raenee Bugarske was first, Kaity Munsey second and Carrie Williamson third.

In the floor exercise, Bugarske was first, Kim Klosno second and Munsey third.

In the balance beam, Jenna Weinbauer was first and Bugarske and Simonis tied for second.

In the uneven parallel bars, Munsey was first, Simonis second and Stefanie Neidermann third.

Then in the all-around competition, Munsey was first, Simonis second and Bugarske third.

At the Spartan Invitational at Madison Memorial Saturday, the Panthers competed in the Green Division that featured some of the top-ranked teams in the state, including top-ranked Middleton and second-ranked Homestead.

"We held our own," said Olszewski. "This is a good meet to help us see how we are doing overall and individually. The competition was very good. We saw some incredible routines."

The Panthers wound up third in the division, with a score of 138.95. Middleton took first with 143.525 and Homestead was second with 141.300.

Bugarske was the top finisher for the Panthers with a second in the floor exercise. Weinbauer had a third on the beam.

Other top 10 finishers for the Panthers were Simonis fifth and Munsey eighth in the bars, Simonis 10th in floor exercise, Bugarske fifth in the beam and Bugarski eighth and Munsey ninth in allaround.
Hockey: The Panthers defeated Rhinelander, 4-1, Thursday, Jan. 25
On Tuesday, the Panthers beat conference-leading Wausau West, 6-4.

Wrestling: The Panthers won a dual meet against Rhinelander Jan. 25, 63-6.

Pacelli

Wrestling: The Cardinals edged Tri-County, 39-36, in a dual meet Jan. 25.

Greg Snow picked up the Cardinals' lone pin, taking Noel Warden in 15 seconds at 152. Mark Barnett won a 12-6 decision at 140. The rest of the Cardinals' points came from forfeits.

On Saturday, the Cardinals captured the Pacelli Invite, edging Kewaunee, 243-242, behind four first-place finishes. Adams-Friendship had 186, Elcho 132, Menomonie Indian 132 and Oneida Nation 30.

Taking first place with 5-0 records were Tim Schwarz at 130, Simon Hesch at 145 and Snow at 152. Joe Groshek took first with a 4-1 record at 171.

Taking seconds at 4-1 were Nathan Werra at 103, Jamie Klein at 112 and Mike Barnett at 140.

Finishing in third place with 3-2 marks were James Duncan Zook at 135 and Nathan Wachowiak at 160.

"This was a good tournament for our young kids," said Pacelli coach Jay Yenter. "With the injuries that we've had, they were thrown right into the fire. It was nice to see them have some success on the varsity."

Yenter said Snow and Schwarz didn't have anyone that could stay with them. "I would have liked to get them some tougher matches, but that's the way it goes sometimes," Yenter said.

Hesch and Groshek won their first varsity tournaments. "Simon looks better and better every time out. Today he put it all together and won his weight class easily," Yenter said. "Joe made one mistake and it kept him from having a perfect record on the day. He's only a freshman and makes a few mistakes. Once Joe cuts down on those mistakes, he can be very successful."

The meet on Tuesday against Bonduel was postponed because of the weather.

Amherst

Boys basketball: The Falcons captured their 14th win of the season, defeating Manawa, 55-44, Jan. 25. The Falcons have one loss this season and are 10-1 in CWC large division play.

Girls basketball: The Falcons defeated Manawa, 61-23, Friday, running their record to 12-0 in the CWC large division and 13-3 overall.

Wrestling: The Falcons and Shiocton tied, 36-36, in a dual meet Jan. 25.

Almond-Bancroft

Boys basketball: The Eagles fell to Tigerton, 58-47, Jan. 25.
Tuesday's game against Port Edwards was postponed because of the weather.

Girls basketball: The Eagles captured a 47-38 decision over Tigerton, Friday. The Eagles are 6-5 in CWC small division and 7-8 overall.
Tuesday's game against Port Edwards was postponed because of the weather.
