CLAUSEN WINS SECOND MlLLROSE CROWN: Two-time Olympian Curt Clausen of Stevens Point led from start to finish to win his second
Millrose Crown in four years on Saturday, Feb. 3. Clausen's one-mile time of 5:53.05 was one second faster than
his winning time in 1998 and two seconds faster than Al Heppner this year.
In the 11-lap race, Clausen took the lead immediately, but was followed closely
by Mike Rohl, Sean Albert, and Heppner. With seven laps to go, Clausen began to pull away from the pack and Heppner
sprinted past Albert and Rohl, but Clausen had already opened a gap. Heppner spent the next four laps trying to
peck into Clausen's lead and pulled right behind him with three laps to go.
At that point Clausen put on a burst to open up a two-second lead and was able
to hold it through the tape. Albert passed a fading Rohl for third, to complete the ARCO Olympic Training Center
sweep. Albert and Heppner both established new personal records.
"My goal was to break 6 minutes. I had to work a little harder than I envisioned,
but I'm happy with my performance and the ARCO sweep," Clausen said.
The ARCO group is not through racing this weekend. Sunday, the trio will enter
a 3K race on Long Island and then prepare for Indoor Nationals in Atlanta on March 2.
