SPASH

Boys basketball: The Panthers improved to 3-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a 59-55 victory at Wisconsin Rapids Friday, Dec. 14. Ryan Taggatz topped the SPASH scoring with 17 points and Ted Schlafke added 14.

The Panthers beat Sun Prairie 65-39 on Saturday, Dec. 15, with Taggatz scoring 22 points for SPASH.

The Panthers are 4-3 overall.

Girls basketball: The Panthers dropped a 37-33 decision to Wisconsin Rapids on Friday, Dec. 14. (See story on page 18.)

The Panthers lost to Milwaukee Divine Savior, 43-33, on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Nicole Gotta led the Panthers with seven points. The girls are 3-3 in the Valley and 3-5 overall.

Wrestling: The Panthers lost to Wisconsin Rapids, 43-15, in a dual meet Thursday, Dec. 13. All the Panthers' points came on decisions. Posting victories were Jon Slezak at 135 pounds, Nate Kurszewski at 140, Kevin Duda at 145, Dan Pawelski and Grey Pope at 171.

The Panthers took first place at the Stoughton Invitational Tournament Saturday, Dec. 15, with 228 points.

Leading the Panthers with 3-0 records were Jake Calhoun at 119 pounds, Adam Kurzynski at 140 and Grey Pope at 171.

Hockey: The Panthers beat Marshfield, 4-1, on Thursday, Dec. 13. Marshfield jumped out to a one-goal lead, but the Panthers came back on a goal by Brian Soik, assisted by Joe Pavelski and Ben Roth to knot the score at 1-1 after one period. Mark Lutz put the Panthers ahead with a second-period goal on an assist by Pavelski. In the third period, the Panthers scored two goals on an empty net in the final minute. Nate Alm got one with an assist by Jimmy Haluska and then Haluska closed out the scoring with an assist by Lutz. Shaun Kruzitski had 16 saves in goal for SPASH.

The Panthers claimed a 5-4 victory in overtime against Northland Pines of Eagle River on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Roth scored a goal with just 5.4 seconds left in the overtime for the victory. Soik, Tanner Gruber, Nolan Wessell and Pavelski also scored goals for the Panthers, who are 4-1-1 overall.

Boys swimming: The Panthers took third in the Eau Claire Santa Invitational Saturday, Dec. 15, with 188 points. Eden Prairie, Minn., was first with 372 points and Eau Claire Memorial was second with 192.

The top individual finishers for the Panthers were second places by Andy Menzel in the 200-meter freestyle and Jon Ronzani in the 100-meter butterfly. The 200-meter medley relay team and the 400-meter relay team also took seconds.

Gymnastics: The Panthers finished third at the Oconomowoc Invitational Saturday, Dec. 15, with 136.775 points. Westosha Central took first with 137.95 points and Sheboygan North/South was second with 137.1.

Raenee Bugarske led the Panthers with a first in the floor exercise with a 9.3 score and a second in the vault with a 9.1 score. She was fifth in all-around competition.

Kaity Munsey tied for third in the floor exercise and Nikki Cruz tied for fourth on the balance beam. Munsey was seventh in all-around.

"We went into the meet looking to place in the top three, so we were very happy with our performance," said Panther coach Mary Olszewski, adding that the Panthers finished among the top state finishers of last year. "The girls now know where they stand and are excited to get back in the gym and work hard to perfect their routines.

PACELLI

Boys basketball: Cardinals defeated Marion, 71-49, Friday, Dec. 14, with Jake Owens pacing a balanced scoring attack with 16 points. Brent Zurawski and Jeff Herzog each had 14 and Derrick Lepak added 12.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood came back to beat the Cardinals, 57-51 on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The Cardinals jumped out to an 18-14 lead in the first quarter and increased their lead to 27-20 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Chargers cut that lead to 37-35 and then outscored the Cardinals 22-14 in the final quarter for the victory. Owens led the Cardinals with 20 points and Lepak added 16.

The Cardinals are now 2-2 in the CWC Large and 2-4 overall.

Girls basketball: The Cardinals handed Marion, a 56-33 defeat on Thursday, Dec. 13. Stephanie Johnson, Emily Radomski and Stephanie Fischer each scored 13 points and Megan Piotrowski added 12.

Pacelli lost to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 57-42, at Wittenberg Tuesday, Dec. 18. Radomski led the Cardinals with 12 points. The Cardinals are 3-2 in the CWC Large and 3-4 overall.

AMHERST

Boys basketball: The Falcons dropped a 53-45 decision to Bonduel Friday, Dec. 14. Tim Olson led Amherst with 10 points.

The Falcons defeated Weyauwega-Fremont, 57-48, Tuesday, Dec. 18, as Scott Nykl scored 18 points, Travis Bassett had 13 and Olson 12. The Falcons are 3-2 in CWC Large and 4-2 overall.

Girls basketball: The Falcons beat Bonduel, 68-41, Thursday, Dec. 13. Jamie Krutza led the Falcons with 25 points and Molly Simkins added 19.

Weyauwega-Fremont edged the Falcons, 46-44, Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Weyauwega. The Falcons dropped to 4-2 in the CWC large and 5-3 overall. Simkins led the Falcons with 18 points, and Krutza added 12.

ROSHOLT

Boys basketball: The Hornets handed Gresham a 62-37 defeat on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Rosholt jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and expanded the lead to 34-18 at the end of the first half. That lead was up to 44-26 after three quarters, and then the Hornets outscored Gresham in the fourth quarter, 18-11.

Dane Zdroik led Rosholt with 15 points, Mat Zdroik added 12 and Adam Macht had 11. Brad Zdroik and Dane Zdroik each grabbed nine rebounds.
"We got a nice contribution from Cody Karch and James Kosmalski," said Rosholt coach Steve Schoofs. "Cody had seven points, all on free throws. He was very active on the boards. James had four steals after coming off the bench. These guys do a lot for us coming from the bench."

The Hornets are 4-0 in the CWC Small and 5-1 overall.

Girls basketball: The Hornets defeated Gresham, 41-20, at Gresham on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Natasha Check led the Rosholt scoring with 14 points and Emily Steines had 13. The Hornets are 5-0 in the CWC Small and 9-0 overall.

Wrestling: The Hornets defeated Tri-County, 39-30, Thursday, Dec. 13.

Rosholt scored on pins by Casey Giese at 112 pound and Devin Groshek at 152, a decision by Lee Schultz at 275 and forfeits at 135, 145, 160 and 171.

The Hornets lost all five of its duals at the Hatchet Dual Meet Classic in Tomahawk on Saturday, Dec. 15.

The Hornets lost 50-21 to Edgar on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Rosholt got points on pins by Donny Carter at 171 and Schultz at 275, decisions by Matt Rice at 145 and a forfeit for Jaime Yenter at 103.

ALMOND-BANCROFT

Boys basketball: The Eagles defeated Tigerton, 67-41, Friday, Dec. 14. Senior Matt Beigel hit three three-pointers in the first quarter to jump-start the Eagles.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Eagles lost to Iola-Scandinavia, 59-43. Beigel led the Eagles, now 4-1 in the CWC small and 4-2 overall, with 10 points.

Girls basketball: Tigerton edged the Eagles, Friday, Dec. 14. The Eagles were led by Heather Wittig who had 18 points.

Iola-Scandinavia nipped the Eagles, 47-46, Tuesday, Dec. 18, dropping the Eagles to 1-4 in the CWC Small and 2-6 overall. Darlene Turzinski led Almond-Bancroft with 10 points.
