Pointer men stumble, women still unbeaten

Men's basketball (7-0) overall:
The Pointers dropped to 7-1 with a loss to UW-Whitewater, 72-71, on Wednesday, Dec. 5.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, the team won, 77-61, at St. Francis (Ill.). UW-SP also beat Carroll, 83-62, last week.

The Pointers travel to UW-Stout on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Kalonji Kadima (Milwaukee) scored all of his team-high 21 points in the second half of Saturday's win at St. Francis. Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) added 17 points after scoring 21 points against Carroll. Kadima added 18 in the win over Carroll, which saw the Pointers tie a school record with 15 three-pointers.

UW-SP is ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III rankings and will play St. Francis again later this season in the Sentry Classic on Dec. 29.

Women's basketball (8-0 overall): The Pointers kept on rolling with four more lopsided victories last week. UW-SP tied a school record for points and posted its biggest victory margin in school history with a 102-32 win over Marian on Saturday, Dec. 1. The Pointers also beat Ripon, 71-42, UW-Whitewater, 90-70, and Edgewood 83-55 to improve to 8-0 for the second straight year.

UW-SP hosts UW-Stout on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. UW-Stout is 5-2 for the season.

The Pointers scored the first 26 points of Saturday's win and surged to a 36-1 lead and 51-7 halftime advantage in the win over Marian. Kari Groshek (Rosholt) led five players in double figures with 18 points in 14 minutes.

Groshek also became the 11th player in school history to record 1,000 career points after leading the team with 19 points in the win over Edgewood. She had a team-high 15 points against Ripon.

The Pointers are ranked fourth in the nation and still have not trailed at any point in any of their seven games this season.

Men's hockey (5-6 overall, 3-3 NCHA): UW-SP posted its biggest shutout win since 1989 with a 10-0 romp over St. Scholastica on Friday, Nov. 30, but then had its biggest shutout loss since 1985 on Saturday in a 7-0 defeat at UW-Superior.

Junior Zenon Kochan (Madison) had his first career hat trick in Friday's game, while Mike Brolsma (Appleton) had two goals and three assists. Nick Glander (Brookfield) also had a short-handed goal and two assists as the Pointers scored five goals in the second period and four in the third period.

Bob Gould (Eagle River) had 27 saves for his fourth career shutout. Gould also had 41 saves in Saturday's loss.

The Pointers host two different opponents at Willett Arena this weekend as they play St. Olaf at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, for the first time since 1987 and then take on Gustavus Adolphus for the first time ever at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night, Dec. 8.

Women's hockey (8-0 overall, 2-0 NCHA): The Pointers got back to action on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Hamline after taking the past two weeks off. UW-SP defeated Hamline in a nonconference game, 4-2. Next the team heads to Lake Forest for a two-game NCHA series at Lake Forest on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8 and 9. Both games are at 2 p.m.

UW-SP has won eight straight games and is ranked fourth in the nation with its 7-0 overall record this season.

Swimming and diving (both 3-0 in WIAC duals): Victories in the 400 freestyle relays capped a pair of victories for UW-SP over Gustavus Adolphus Saturday, Dec. 1.

The Pointer men won the final event in 3:11.58 as Erik Johnson (Albert Lea, Minn.) pulled away in the final leg to win by three seconds. The Pointers won the dual 134-108. The Pointer women won the relay in 3:41.22 as Jean Hughes (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) won the anchor leg to win by a half second and capture the dual meet victory by a score of 126-115.

Johnson and Hughes both won two individual events to lead their respective teams. Johnson won the 200 freestyle in 1:43.97 and the 100 freestyle in 47.32 seconds. Hughes took the 200 freestyle in 2:00.95 and the 100 freestyle in 55.61 seconds.

Eric Sands (South St. Paul, Minn.) and Anthony Harris (St. Paul, MN) were also a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay, as well as the winning 400 medley relay team in 3:40.21. Sands also won the 50 freestyle in 21.90 seconds and Harris claimed the 200 butterfly in 2:01.01.

The UW-SP women won the 400 medley relay in 4:05.29. Christine Sammons (Hastings, Minn.) swam on the relay and won the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.03. Mary Thone (Minneapolis, Minn.) was also part of the winning relay and won the 200 butterfly in 2:16.80. Jen Randall (Wisconsin Rapids) was on both winning relays.

Patricia Larson (Superior) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events for the Pointers.

The Pointers next compete Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8, at the Wheaton Invitational at 9 a.m.

Wrestling: The Pointers had three runner-up finishes at last weekend's Wisconsin Open at UW-Parkside.

Joe Bavlnka (Germantown) was second at 184 pounds and was the top collegiate finisher at the weight class, losing to an unattached wrestler in the finals.

Yan White (Antigo) was second at 197 pounds and Cody Koening (Underwood, Iowa) was second at 165 pounds.

The Pointers had a strong performance at 165 with two other wrestlers in the top six as Logan McLennan (Little Falls, Minn.) was fifth and Jamie Schultz (Loyal) was sixth.

UW-SP was scheduled to compete in its first dual meet of the season with a WIAC contest at UW-Platteville on Thursday, Dec. 8.
