Pointer men post most lopsided win in history

Men's Basketball (9-2 overall, 1-2 WIAC):
The Pointers are off this week after a successful week, posting a key WIAC victory and their most lopsided win in school history to enter the holiday break at 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

UW-SP used a career-high 30 points from junior Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) and an impressive 16-point performance from freshman point guard Tamaris Relerford (Beloit) to beat UW-La Crosse, 86-75, in overtime on Wednesday.

Neither team held more than a four-point advantage in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but the Pointers pulled away in overtime, outscoring the Eagles 13-1 to end the game.

UW-SP had six players in double figures on Thursday in a 109-44 thumping of Mount Senario. Iserloth scored 22 points in 11 minutes of playing time and Nick Bennett (Stevens Point) added 13 points as the Pointers won by their biggest victory margin ever.

UW-SP was ranked 16th in the latest national poll and is off until hosting St. Francis (Ill.) in the Sentry Classic on Dec. 29.

Women's Basketball (9-1 overall, 2-1 WIAC): UW-SP takes a 9-1 overall record and 2-1 WIAC mark into the break after beating UW-La Crosse, 77-59. Five players scored in double figures to lead the Pointers in the victory, led by Amie Schultz (Appleton) with 15 points and Tara Schmitt (Brookfield) with 14 points.

The Pointers led 36-33 in the second half and scored 16 straight points on a 25-2 spurt to take control. Freshman Amanda Nechuta (Mosinee) hit two three-pointers during the run.

UW-SP is ranked 14th in the country and will play its next two games in the San Antonio, Texas, area against Schreiner and Texas Lutheran.
Men's Hockey (7-6 overall, 3-3 NCHA): The Pointers did not play this past week and remain off for the holiday break until the weekend of Jan. 4-5 when they play at St. Mary's on Friday and at St. Thomas on Saturday.

Women's Hockey (11-1 overall, 5-1 NCHA): The Pointers used a thrilling comeback on Friday night to post a 4-3 overtime win over UW-Superior, but then suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday in a 5-1 loss to the Yellowjackets.

The defeat snapped UW-SP's 12-game winning streak, which was the second-longest in the country behind defending national champion Middlebury (Vt.).

Freshman Jackie Schmitt (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) scored with 4:29 left in regulation on Friday and then scored the game-winner in overtime, marking the fifth consecutive game she scored the game-winning goal. The Pointers trailed, 3-0, with five minutes left in the second period before Ann Ninnemann (Rosemount, Minn.) and Stacie Cushing (Brookings, S.D.) scored to start the comeback. Shannon Kasparek (South Lyon, Mich.) had several big saves and finished with 17 stops overall to earn the win.

Liz Goergen (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored four minutes into Saturday's game, but the Yellowjackets scored the last five goals for the victory. The Pointers still held a 29-27 advantage in shots.

Swimming And Diving (both 3-0 in WIAC duals): The Pointers did not compete last week and are off until their annual trip to Hawaii. UW-SP takes part in the University of Hawaii Rainbow Classic on Jan. 2.

Wrestling (0-2 overall, 0-2 WIAC): The Pointers, ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division III, lost to third-ranked UW-La Crosse last week, 30-6.

The Pointers' other victory came from freshman Cody Koenig (Underwood, Iowa), who posted a 3-2 win at 165 pounds.

UW-SP is off until Jan. 4 when it hosts No. 2 ranked Wartburg (Iowa) in a dual match at 7:30 p.m.
