BLACK BELT TESTS: Eleven years after
achieving black belt status, three martial artists will test for their 5th degree black belts Sunday, Dec. 9, at
the Stevens Point YMCA.
Father-son duo Mark and Jim Henkel, Rudolph, and Karen Johnson, Stevens
Point, have trained together the entire time under taekwondo master Dwight
Stevens.
Testing for this level involves board breaking, the sipjin form and a presentation
on taekwondo instruction.
Johnson is the owner and instructor at Stevens Taekwondo Academy: A New Way of
Life. Jim Henkel has been her assistant instructor for four years while attending the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point.
Both Henkels helped Johnson remodel and open her school.
Five other black belts will test for higher rank as well as more than 50 color
belt students.
Those testing for promotion range from grade school children to martial artists
in their 50s. Dozens of UW-SP students will also participate.
The annual Black Belt of the Year will be awarded at this testing, in memory of
MJ Attoe, a 16-year-old black belt who died in 1993.
Testing begins at 1 p.m., with black belts scheduled for 3 p.m.
