Week in Review
SPASH
Soccer: The SPASH team (1-2 overall) started out strong in Onalaska at the Waunakee Tournament on Friday,
Aug. 24, with a 3-2 comeback win over Onalaska. Onalaska led 2-0 before SPASH got hot and came back. However, the
team cooled off on Saturday, Aug. 25, getting shut out by Delaven-Darien, 2-0, and Rhinelander, 1-0.
Volleyball: The SPASH team came in third at the SPASH Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 25. The team got
off to a good start, winning six of its first seven games, but finished with three straight losses. Meg Wehrwein
had seven kill assists and Brook Roth had seven aces.
Tennis: The SPASH girls tennis team opened its Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet season with a 7-0
pasting of Antigo on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The team lost only three games all day. Lauren Hom, Meagan Palmer and Tracey
Rozak, the No. 1, 2 and 4 singles players, all shut out their opponents as did the No. 2 doubles team of Jackie
Baier and Jenna Weinbauer. The team was to start its season on Saturday, but was rained out against Eau Claire.
PACELLI
Football: The Cardinals opened their season in style with a last-second 28-27 non-conference victory
over Owen-Withee on Friday, Aug. 24. Quarterback Brad Heeg's 32-yard heave to Jim Milkowski as time expired was
the difference in the game. Heeg, who passed for 237 yards also hooked up with Jake Owens on a 26-yard touchdown
pass earlier in the game. Pacelli had seemed to be out of the game, down, 27-8, midway through the third quarter,
but stormed back for the win.
Soccer: The soccer team is off to a rocky start after a pair of losses. The team lost, 8-1, to St. Mary
Central in its season opener on Saturday, Aug. 25. Karl Wanserski scored the team's lone goal. Monday, Aug. 27,
the Cardinals suffered another beating, this time at the hands of Mosinee, 6-1. Colin Zinda's goal late in the
second half prevented the shutout.
ROSHOLT
Football: The Hornets had an exciting start to their season with a 27-25 win over Iola-Scandanavia in
double overtime on Friday, Aug. 24. Rosholt headed into the second half with a 19-0 lead, but was barely able to
hold off the Iola-Scandanavia charge. A.J. Wiza rushed for the game-winning touchdown, with Randy Printz scoring
the two-point conversion. Printz also scored on a pair of three-yard runs earlier in the game. The teams other
score came on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Brad Zdroik to Dane Zdroik.
Volleyball: The Rosholt volleyball team was dominant at the Amherst Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 25,
taking first place by going 10-0 in their matches.
AMHERST
Football: The Falcons opened their season with an overpowering 47-0 victory over Wild Rose on Friday,
Aug. 24. Wild Rose had no answer for the Amherst ground game; starting halfback Derek Konkol had nine carries for
101 yards and three touchdowns, starting fullback Chris Blenker added 87 yards on 12 carries with a pair of touchdowns
and backup halfback Sam Werner chipped in with nine carries for 60 yards and a touchdown. The Falcon defense held
Wild Rose to a total of 34 yards.
Volleyball: The girls volleyball team got off to a good start, taking second place at the Amherst Invitational
on Saturday, Aug. 25. The team was 6-4 in its matches. Jamie Krutza and Amber Juris led the way for the team. Juris
hit 52 of 54 serves in play, while adding six aces and seven kills. Krutza was 44 of 45 on serves, had three aces,
12 digs and six kills.
ALMOND-BANCROFT
Football: The Eagles lost a close-one, 17-13, to Port Edwards in their season opener on Friday, Aug.
24. The team lost starting running back Christopher Lamb to an ankle sprain early in the second quarter. Jacob
Warzynski played well in his place, rushing 22 times for 86 yards. Lamb's status for next week's game is uncertain.
Quarterback Joel Erickson threw a pair of touchdown passes, one to Vince Konczak and the other to Dave Johnson.
Volleyball: The girls volleyball team had a rough outing, finishing 1-5 in its matches at the Amherst
Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 25. There were some bright spots for the team. Alicia Dill had 16 service points,
four kills and three digs. Darlene Turzinski added 14 kills and three block kills and Courtney Newby had 11 service
points and 13 assists.
