Wal-Mart employees earn right to play all-star softball team
An all-star baseball team including Ozzie Smith, Brooks Robinson, Gary Carter, Steve Garvey, Daryl Porter, Dot
Richardson, Lisa Fernandez and Crystal Bustos will compete in a softball game against a team of Stevens Point Wal-Mart
associates on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 11:30 a.m. at Zenoff Park.
The Wal-Mart employees earned the right to host the game by winning a sales contest sponsored by the Nabisco Biscuit
Co. and the Coca-Cola Co.
The store competed in the contest against other Wal-Mart stores in its region. There are approximately 1,000 stores
in the region. "To be the No. 1 store out of that big of a quantity, we're very excited," Chris Peters,
assistant store manager at the Stevens Point Wal-Mart, said.
Peters said approximately 50-60 Wal-Mart employees will play in the game.
Smith, Robinson, Carter, Garvey and Porter are all former Major League players.
Robinson was the league MVP in 1964 and the World Series MVP in 1970. He also earned 16 Gold Gloves during his
23-year career.
Carter hit an impressive 324 home runs during his career and was also a member of the World Series champion 1986
Mets.
Smith is often referred to as one of the best shortstops to ever play the game.
Richardson, Fernandez and Bustos were all members of the U.S.A.'s 2000 Olympic Gold-Medal winning softball team. |
