Pointer baseball team splits doubleheader

The Pointers are 13-4 overall after splitting a doubleheader with Winona State University on Tuesday.

The Pointers won the opener 3-0 behind a one-hitter by Troy Bielmeier (Wautoma). The only hit was a fourth-inning single. A Paul Molitor (Reedsburg) double drove in the Pointers' first run.

In the second game, the first five batters for Winona State reached base in the fifth inning and came around to score for a 5-0 lead. The Pointers scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh, for a 5-3 loss.

UW-SP overcame poor weather for four non-conference victories over the weekend, sweeping doubleheaders from Marian and Northland. The Pointers beat Marian 5-3 and 9-8 on Saturday with the second game finishing with a snow-covered field. UW-SP then belted four home runs in each game of a 12-1 and 18-3 sweep of Northland on Sunday.

Sam Molski (Stevens Point) hit three home runs in three different games for the Pointers during the weekend, including a game-winning two-run shot in the opener against Marian. Jason Kozelek (Waterford) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Northland on Sunday and settled with a one-hitter in the 12-1 win.

The Pointers are ranked 29th in the latest Division III rankings and have a busy weekend with six games in three days, including a home doubleheader against Augsburg Saturday at 1 p.m.

Softball

UW-SP improved to 11-2 during the week, but saw its five-game winning streak end Tuesday.

The Pointers dropped the first game of a doubleheader to UW-Platteville when the Pioneers scored an unearned run in the fourth inning. The Pointers came back to win the second game, 4-1, behind the pitching of Nicki Bertram (Marion) and a two-run home run by Sarah Berg (Stillwater, Minn.) in the first inning.

The Pointers swept Concordia, 13-4 and 12-0, on Friday. Freshman Nicole Alexander (Dodgeville) hit a grand slam and a three-run homer in the second game to finish three-for-four with eight RBI's. Nikki Best (Portage) and Cari Briley (Creston, Iowa) each had three hits apiece as well.

UW-Stevens Point also won the opening game as Kelly Rutta (Stevens Point) was two-for-two with two triples and Berg was three-for-four.
The Pointers were scheduled to host their home opener Thursday at 3 p.m. against Elmhurst (Ill.). UW-SP will take part in the UW-Stout Invitational this weekend.
