SPASH
Baseball: SPASH's season, arguably its
best since the Panthers won the state title in 1987, came to an end Tuesday with a 5-2 loss at Appleton West in
the WIAA Regional. Steve Wiczek hit a two-run homer in the first inning but the Terrors scored five unanswered
runs. SPASH entered the game ranked No. 1 in the state baseball coaches association poll while West was No. 2.
The Panthers completed their perfect WVC season last Friday with 10-6 and 15-2 wins over visiting Antigo.
Boys golf: The Panthers won the WIAA Regional at SentryWorld Tuesday with a 318.
Joe Pavelski shot a 74 to earn medallist honors while Jake Barge (77), Tim Trzebiatowski (83) and Tony Trzebiatowski
(84) scored for SPASH.
Girls soccer: SPASH and Marshfield battled through two overtimes and neither team
scored in a 0-0 tie Tuesday. The Panthers had more than 40 shots on goal and Nikki Falkowski made six saves in
SPASH's goal. The Panthers dropped out of the race for first place in the WVC last Thursday, falling 2-0 at Wausau
East.
Softball: SPASH got revenge in its WIAA Regional opener Tuesday, a 4-0 win at Ashwaubenon.
The Jaguars had bested the Panthers earlier this season and several times in postseason play. The Panthers scored
a run in the second inning and topped host Wausau West, 1-0, last Friday.
Boys tennis: The No. 1 doubles team of Zac Newhouse and Matt Schroeder is the only
SPASH representative to advance to the WIAA Sectional. The doubles team had a bye in the subsectional Monday, where
none of the Panthers who played moved on.
Boys track: Ten individuals and two relay teams qualified for sectionals as the
Panthers finished second with 133 points, behind D.C. Everest's 149.5 at the D.C. Everest WIAA Regional Monday.
The top four places qualify for the WIAA sectional. Winning events were Steve Baumhofer
(long jump with 21-9 and high jump with 6-1), Chris Solinsky (3,200-meter run in 10:01.5), the 1,600 relay (3:26.3)
and the 3,200 relay (8:28.40). Cory Flisakowski (200), Josh Garbe (800) and Chad Erspamer (triple jump) took second;
Phil Lazarski (110 hurdles), Chase Kostichka (triple jump) and Travis Laird (long jump) were third; and Aaron Huser
(300 hurdles) and Robb Kolodziej (discus and shot put) finished fourth.
Girls track: A quartet of relays and 10 individuals finished in the top four to
advance to sectionals as SPASH was second with 150 points, trailing D.C. Everest (189.5), at the WIAA Regional,
hosted by the Evergreens Monday.
Erin Legro (100 hurdles in 15.3), Tracy Knippel (triple jump with 34-5-1/2), Sarah
Schurbert (long jump with 16-7) and Erin Guzinski (high jump with 5-0) finished first; Legro (300 hurdles), Amber
Perri (400), Abby Afori-Amoah (shot put) and the 1,600 relay were second; Kim Klosno (400), Mallory Fredrickson
(100 hurdles), Kjersten Johnson (3,200), Jenny Martin (discus), the 800 relay and the 3,200 relay took third; and
Schurbert (400), Jackie Kropp (800) and the 400 relay were fourth.
Pacelli
Baseball: The Cardinals advanced to the WISAA state tournament with a 1-0 win over
Eau Claire Regis and a 9-2 victory over Marshfield Columbus Saturday. Pacelli's Josh Owens held the Ramblers to
two hits in the regional championship game.
Boys tennis: The Cardinals scored four points at the CWCC meet Saturday in Wisconsin
Rapids. Adam Baser finished second at No. 1 singles and Ross Glodowski was fourth at No. 4 singles.
Girls track: Pacelli finished third with 82 points, behind Chippewa Falls McDonell
(195) and Marshfield Columbus (100), at the CWCC meet Saturday in Marshfield. Emily Swenson finished second in
the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, Kristin Mitchell was second in the high jump and Laura McCorkell was the runner-up
in the 800. The 1,600 and 3,200 relays were third.
Amherst
Baseball: Amherst scattered five hits and fell 4-1 at Almond-Bancroft Tuesday in
the WIAA Regional, finishing its season 12-9. The Falcons topped Plainfield Tri-County last Friday 13-4, taking
advantage of Penguin errors in the WIAA Regional.
Boys golf: In the program's second season, Amherst is a WIAA Regional champion
after winning the Princeton Regional Tuesday with a 338. Brian Pionkowski (83), Jeremy Sherf (83), Matt Clinton
(84), Jeff Cloninger (88) and Mike Borgen (92) scored for the Falcons.
Softball: Amherst posted a pair of shutouts to win the first two games of the WIAA
Regional last Friday. After topping Gillett 12-0, in a game resumed from last Tuesday, the Falcons roughed up Iola-Scandinavia
11-0 in the second game.
Amherst scored four times in the first and five runs in the fifth against the Thunderbirds.
Jenny Jastromski held I-S to three hits while striking out eight and walking none. Against Gillett, the Falcons
had a five-run first and scored six in the second. JoAnn Konkol added a solo homer in the fourth. Crystal Morgan
had three RBIs while Jastromski allowed only three hits on the mound.
Boys track: Six Falcons qualified in individual events and two relays moved on
to the WIAA Sectional as Amherst finished second with 106 points, trailing Marion (138), at the WIAA Regional in
Rosholt Monday.
Philip Koback (100 dash in 11.3, 200 in 22.8) and the 400 relay (45.8) won events;
Koback (long jump) finished second; Paul Konkol (long jump) and the 3,200 relay were third; and Derek Konkol (triple
jump), Dan Ehr (3,200), Jordan Selbo (800) and Mark Jakubek (shot put) took fourth.
Girls track: Six individuals and a trio of relays advanced to the WIAA Sectional
as Amherst finished third with 103 points, trailing Rosholt (201) and Iola-Scandinavia (124), at the WIAA Regional
at Rosholt Monday.
Liz Heinz (discus with 101-0) and the 800 relay (1:57.5) finished first; Missy
Kayon (100 hurdles), Kristin Woyak (shot put), Samantha Diver (800) grabbed seconds; Kayon (high jump), Woyak (discus),
Megan Harvey (300 hurdles), Jane Ovanin (1,600 and 3,200) and the 1,600 relay took third; and Kayon (200) and the
3,200 relay finished fourth.
Almond-Bancroft
Baseball: A-B scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to edge Rosholt, 4-3,
in extra innings, in the WIAA Regional Wednesday. A four-run fifth inning helped the Eagles top visiting Amherst
4-1 Tuesday in the WIAA Regional. The Eagles' Kent Dernbach shut out Wild Rose 4-0 last Friday in the WIAA Regional.
Softball: The Eagles scored five times in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and
beat Royall 8-3 at home Tuesday in the WIAA Regional. A nine-run fourth inning catapulted the Eagles to a 10-0
romp over visiting Necedah last Thursday in a WIAA Regional.
Boys track: Mike Johnson advanced to the WIAA Sectional in three events Monday
at the WIAA Regional in Randolph. The Eagles finished eighth with 35 points as Johnson won the 800 (2:12.42) and
grabbed third place in the 400. He was also a member of the third-place 1,600 relay.
Girls track: Stephanie Jenz finished second in the shot put to lead A-B to a fifth-place finish with 60.5 points
at the WIAA Regional in Randolph Monday. Also qualifying for the WIAA Sectional with third-place finishes were
Renee Reince (triple jump, 200), Beth Turner (400), Christine Johnson (300 hurdles), the 400 relay and the 1,600
relay.
Rosholt
Baseball: The Hornets fell to Almond-Bancroft 5-4 in eight innings in the WIAA Regional Wednesday. Rosholt edged
host Iola-Scandinavia 4-3 Tuesday in the WIAA Regional. The Hornets used a Ryan Zdroik grand slam to top host Port
Edwards 11-5 last Friday the WIAA Regional.
Boys track: Rosholt advanced seven individuals and a trio of relays to the WIAA sectional as the Hornets finished
third with 104 points, behind Marion (138) and Amherst (106), at the Rosholt WIAA Regional Monday.
Rob Cherek (300 hurdles in 41.6) and Joel Skornia (high jump with 5-10) won events; Cherek (pole vault), Luke Lane
(triple jump and 400), the 1,600 relay and the 3,200 relay finished second; Brady Staszak (3,200) and Nathaniel
Miller (110 hurdles) were third; and Willie VanDeYacht (1,600), Andy Hartvig (discus) and the 400 relay took fourth.
Girls track: The Hornets ran away with the WIAA Regional title at Rosholt Monday,
advancing over a dozen individuals to the WIAA sectional.
Finishing first were Jenna Eschenbauch (high jump with 4-11, 100 hurdles in 15.6,
300 hurdles in 50.4), Tami Scott (1,600 in 5:55.3, 3,200 in 12:13.3), Steph Wierzba (shot put with 34-4-1/2), the
400 relay, the 1,600 relay and the 3,200 relay. Amy Scott (high jump), Kari Kurszewski (discus), Jen Zdroik (3,200),
Melissa Arrigo (100 dash), Jackie Yenter (1,600) and the 800 relay were second; Kate Flick (long jump), Lyndsey
Carter (shot put) and Allie Larson (200) finished third; and Carter (discus), Nicky Bembenek (3,200), Sheena Omernik
(400), Lindsey Peplinski (800), Allie Larson (triple jump) and Lisa Yenter (1,600) took fourth.
