UW-SP's Juno wins national 800 meters title
For the second straight year, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women's
track and field team has a national champion.
Leah Juno, a junior from Brillion, won the 800-meter run title at the NCAA Division 3 National Championships in
Naperville, Ill. last weekend. Juno edged Heather Stone of the University of South at the finish line, running
a school-record time of 2:10.60. Stone finished in 2:10.67. Juno's time is also the ninth-fastest in NCAA Division
3 history.
"Leah led the first 700 meters. Stone likes to sit back and she took the lead during the final stretch,"
UW-SP women's coach Len Hill said. "Then with 20 meters to go, Leah had something left. Stone fell at the
finish line and Leah did a nice dive, a sprinter's finish dive."
Rosholt's Sarah Groshek won the javelin championship last year.
Freshman Becky Lebak finished ninth in the 5,000 for UW-SP in 9:57. "She ran as good of a race as she can
now. For a freshman to finish that high is outstanding," Hill said.
As a team, the Pointers were 23rd with 10 points.
Indoor national champions Mike Mead and Dan Schwamberger both finished third to lead the UW-SP men's team to a
sixth-place finish with 32 points. Lincoln University and North Central College tied for first place with 52 points.
UW-La Crosse was fourth with 34.5 and UW-Oshkosh was fifth with 33.
Mead jumped 6-10-3/4 in the high jump and Schwamberger finished the 5,000 meter run in 14:39.77. James Nielsen
of the University of California-San Diego won the 5,000 in 14:34.97.
Jesse Drake placed in two events, taking fourth in the 10,000 (30:40.54) and fifth in the 5,000 (14:43.51). The
4x100 relay of Shawn Hau, Kyle Newman, Craig Gunderson and Eric Miller finished fourth in 41.53.
Shane Suehring was fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:04.03) and Chris Horvat finished eighth in the 800 (1:52.03).
The 4x400 relay of Gunderson, Hau, Horvat and Miller also finished eighth (3:19.46).
