Hall falls in U.S. Olympic wrestling finals

Dennis Hall's dream for an Olympic gold medal in Syndey, Australia was dashed Saturday in the Olympic Wrestling Trials, in Dallas, Texas.

Hall, of Plover, entered the tournament ranked No. 1 at 127.75 pounds and faced Jim Gruenwald, a Greendale, Wis. graduate in the championship. Gruenwald, who won the challenge tournament, had to beat Hall two out of three times to earn the Olympic berth.

Hall, who won the silver medal in 1996, won the first match 3-2. But Gruenwald rallied to win the second match 3-0 and then captured the championship with an 8-3 victory over Hall.

Hall and Gruenwald have been battling in major events going back to their high school days and this is the first time that Gruenwald has won a tournament against Hall.

In addition to his Olympic silver, Hall won the 1995 World gold medal, a 1994 World bronze medal and competed on the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team.
