Harms resigns from UW-SP softball post; Okray named new golf coach

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point fastpitch softball team has a new coach after Stevens Point native Kelli Harms stepped down.

Ali Brian, a former player at Notre Dame College of Ohio, replaces Harms. Brian was an All-Conference catcher at Notre Dame and is coaching the Ohio Emeralds Junior Olympic Fastpitch team this summer. She played two seasons at Notre Dame after transferring after two years at Tiffin University (Ohio).

"I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to come to UW-Stevens Point and share my love of softball and guide the team to success," Brian said.

Brian, who graduated from Notre Dame with marketing degree in May, plans to pursue a master's degree at UW-SP.

Harms, a Stevens Point Area Senior High and UW-SP graduate, resigned after one year on the job. She led the Pointers to a 27-13-1 record and a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runner-up finish.

Harms also played four years and was an assistant coach for two seasons at UW-SP. She resigned to complete her master's degree and begin her search for full-time employment.

OKRAY GETS GOLF JOB: Mike Okray, the boys golf coach at Pacelli High, is the new women's golf coach at UW-SP.

Okray replaces Scott Frazier, who resigned after being named the 1999 WIAC Coach of the Year and leading the Pointers to the 1997 WIAC championship. Frazier was the inaugural coach of the program when it began in 1999.

Okray served as an assistant coach with the Pointers in the inaugural 1996 season. He inherits a team that finished third at last season's WIAC championships.

JUDGE'S DEFENSE: The UW-SP football team has a new defensive coordinator to replace Pete McAdams, who left the Pointers to lead the SPASH football team.

Jeff Judge will guide the UW-SP defense after a six-year stint as the defensive coordinator at Simpson College (Iowa).

"I'm very excited because the Wisconsin league is the best Division 3 league in America," Judge said. "I'm excited to come to a situation of a tradition-rich conference and a tradition-rich program like Stevens Point."

Prior to his stint at Simpson, Judge was the recruiting coordinator at the University of Utah for the current New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel and served as the offensive coordinator for four years at Morehead State University (Ky.).

"We're looking forward to Jeff continuing the tradition of outstanding defensive coordinators at Stevens Point," UW-SP coach John Miech said. "Jeff has a vast array of experience, is an outstanding recruiter and has a very professional attitude."

Under McAdams, UW-SP's defense led the WIAC in scoring defense last season and ranked second in Division 3 with 26 interceptions. Prior to McAdams, the Pointers' defense was led by current UW-Eau Claire coach Todd Hoffner and UW-SP Associate Dean of Physical Education Fred Hebert.

Judge, a Gilbert, Iowa, native, will also serve as the facilities director at UW-SP.
