Plover's dream season ends at hands of Wausau

The Plover American Legion Post 543 baseball team saw its season come to an end Sunday in a 9-5 loss to host Wausau at the AAA Legion Regional.

The Black Sox (37-7), who won the Valley League with an undefeated record, lost to Wausau twice in two days.

"The season was remarkable," Plover coach Kraig Terpstra said. "The kids played outstanding baseball all season and endured a long schedule.

"But the thing is with these kids, I'm sure they'd trade in each win for a chance to reach the goal they had."

On Sunday, Plover rallied with four runs in the third inning to take a 5-4 lead. But Wausau bounced back with a run in the third and then scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings to win.

"I was proud of the guys for fighting back. We really hit the ball impressively. I thought we were one or two hits away from knocking out their pitcher," Terpstra said.

We just didn't seem to have the knockout punch. We had some non-characteristic errors and they regained the lead and we couldn't get over the hump."

After falling to Wausau Saturday, the Black Sox broke a ninth-inning tie to beat Wisconsin Rapids 4-3. That win set up the Sunday showdown with Wausau.

Terpstra said he will miss the players who won't be back with Plover next year. "Not only were they great players but they were great kids. They were successful this season and they're the type of kids that will be successful in all that they do," he said.

A strong outing from Jesse Nagorski wasn't enough last Friday as the Sixers fell to Wausau 4-3. Nagorski allowed five hits, struck out 12 and walked three.

"Jesse pitched an outstanding game and it's disappointing we couldn't figure out a way to get him runs and win the game," Post 6 coach Tom Drohner said.

With their season on the line Saturday, walks hurt the Sixers in a 9-6 loss to Wisconsin Rapids. Post 6 had to play catch-up after Rapids scored once in the first inning and four runs in the second and third to take a 9-1 lead.

The Sixers had a last chance to tie the game in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Chris Jacobson hit a shot to right-centerfield only to have the centerfielder make a running catch.

Post 6 finished the season with a 12-19 record. "We started out with about 16 guys and from the original cast, we only had nine people stick around. I really appreciate the effort those nine people put into our program. They're all a class act. I really appreciate the time they gave," Drohner said.

"I want to thank all the fans, parents and especially the players who made the season, which I call a beginning of good things to come."

With a young team, Drohner is looking forward to next year. "I'm real excited. I know that we have a lot of kids coming back. And we have some young kids coming up that are going to play at the Legion level. I think we're going to be very competitive next year."
