Area athletes bring home medals from the Badger State Games

Sara Groshek of Stevens Point and Elizabeth Graham of Rosholt both won a pair of gold medals at the Badger State Games in Madison last month.

Groshek captured the discus (129-feet-11) in the Female Open division and also won the shot put (42-2-3/4) in the female open division.

Graham, competing in the masters division in swimming, won the 50 butterfly (1:03.06) and the 100 freestyle (1:47.71) in the Female 50-54 age group.

Zach Newhouse and Matt Schrader, who advanced to the WIAA state meet in May for the Stevens Point Area Senior High boys tennis team, won the gold in the 18 & Under Doubles - Male. Brandon Stibb of Stevens Point captured his Open division in wrestling.

Stevens Point's Steve Elmer finished first in the cycling mountain biking Male Experts (14-17) division (1:38.55). Scott Cook of Stevens Point shot a 93 to win the Amateur Men's division in disc golf and Sue Lehnert of Stevens Point had a 112 to take the Women's division in disc golf.

Besides Graham's two golds, five other area athletes finished first in masters swimming events. David Bart of Stevens Point won the 100 breaststroke Male 40-44 (1:20.75); George May of Stevens Point grabbed the gold in the 100 breaststroke Male 60-64 (1:35); James Sevenich of Stevens Point took the 50 freestyle Male 70-74 (40.43); Maggie Woodside of Amherst won the 200 freestyle Female 45-49 (3:26.50); and Roberta Johnson of Plover finished first in the 100 freestyle Female 55-59 (1:53.16).

Johnson, May and Sevenich also had a pair of runner-up performances. Johnson received silver medals in her age division in the 200 freestyle (4:21.84) and 50 freestyle (45.75); May was second in his division in the 50 freestyle (35.09) and the 50 butterfly (44.85); and Sevenich was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle (1:44.44) and the 100 backstroke (2:12.46).

Tim Swiecki of Stevens Point also grabbed a pair of silver medals in the masters Male 55-59 division in swimming. He was second in the 50 freestyle (51.13) and the 100 breaststroke (2:24.61). Also finishing second in the masters division were Graham (50 freestyle Female 50-54 in 45.88), Sherri Lynn Hefferan (50 butterfly Female 30-34 in 45.22), Jerome Gargulak of Plover (100 backstroke Male 35-39 in 1:31.66) and Robert Ellis Hughes (50 butterfly Male 25-29 in 32.83).

In wrestling, Benjamin Kureck of Stevens Point finished second in his weight class in the open division and Jason Dean Smogoleski of Stevens Point grabbed the silver in the modified division.

Plover's Dustin Vande Zande was second in the Male Sports 35-44 division in the cycling mountain bike event (1:25:00.1). Steve Held of Stevens Point shot a 99 to finish second in the open division in disc golf. Shan Twit of Stevens Point finished second in the Adult Black Belt Men Lightweight (18-34) in martial arts. R.J. Loeffler of Stevens Point grabbed the silver in the shotgun shooting - trap event in the veteran division (70 & older) with a score of 94.

Grey Pope of Stevens Point won a bronze medal in wrestling, finishing third in his weight class in the Grades 9-10 division. Swiecki finished third in his division of the 100 freestyle (2:05.55).

Fourths: Paavo Jensen of Stevens Point (adult track & field 1,500 meters Male 50-59 in 5:11.12), Robert Ellis Hughes of Stevens Point (swimming masters 50 freestyle Male 25-29 in 30.29), Gargulak (200 freestyle Male 35-39 in 2:49.08), Laurie Schroeder of Stevens Point (swimming masters 100 breaststroke Female 35-39 in 2:04.52) and Hefferan (200 freestyle Female 30-34 in 3:06.99).

Fifths: Scott Paco Gralla of Stevens Point (adult track & field 800 meters Male 40-49 in 2:14.27), David Bart of Stevens Point (swimming masters 100 freestyle Male 40-44 in 1:08.09), Kristeen Carne of Stevens Point (swimming masters 100 breaststroke Female 30-34 in 1:59.87), Schroeder (100 freestyle Female 35-39 in 1:47.46) and Woodside (50 butterfly Female 45-49 in 56.76).

Sixths: Gralla (400 dash Male 40-49 in 58.19), Robert Friedrich of Stevens Point (swimming masters 200 freestyle Male 45-49 in 3:10.96) and Schroeder (50 freestyle Female 35-39 in 45.18).
