Pointer women win in basketball; men lose

The UW-SP women's basketball continued their winning ways Wednesday night, defeating UW-Whitewater, 79-56, at Berg Gym.

\The men's seven-game winning streak ended, as pulled out a 73-71 victory in the final seconds.

Kari Groshek of Rosholt led the Pointer women with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The men trailed at half, 33-30, but caught the Warhawks, 71-71, before a shot with less than 4 seconds remaining gave Whitewater the win. Josh Iserloth (Plymouth) led the Pointers with 14 points, and Brent Larson (Ladysmith), Jay Bennett (Rhinelander) and Ron Nolting (Preston, Iowa) each had 10.

Women's basketball

Despite its 6-0 record before Wednesday night, the UW-SP women's basketball team did not receive any votes in this week's Division III rankings.

The Pointers went to 6-0 for the sixth time in school history with a 99-59 romp over Marian Saturday. UW-SP had 14 different players score and was led by junior Amie Schultz (Appleton), who reached her career high by halftime with 19 points in the first half, and 22 points for the game.

The 99 points were the most scored by the Pointers since a 100-48 win over Cornell (Iowa) in 1991. It was the third-highest point total in school history.

UW-Stevens Point also beat Ripon 72-59 last week as the Pointers jumped out to a 26-point lead and cruised to the win behind 16 points by Groshek.

Men's basketball

Riding its second 7-0 start in four years, the UW-SP men's basketball team was ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III rankings by D3hoops.com.

The Pointers received seven of just 25 first-place votes and are 10 points behind top-ranked Carthage (Wis.). UW-SP is four points behind No. 2 Wooster (Ohio). The Pointers were fourth last week, but previous No. 1 Calvin (Mich.) lost to Spring Arbor (Mich.).

The Pointers beat Lawrence Thursday, Nov. 30, as Iserloth scored a career high 24 points. Junior Nick DeVos (De Pere) also had a career high with 17 points, all in the final 11:18 of the game to help the Pointers pull away for the victory.

Men's hockey

The Pointers will play their final series before the holiday break when they travel to the Twin Cities this weekend for a pair of games against Minnesota foes, Augsburg on Friday, Dec. 8, and Bethel on Saturday, Dec. 9.

UW-Stevens Point has won six of its last seven games and is 7-3 for the season after splitting a series with a pair of Vermont opponents last weekend. The Pointers, ranked fourth in the Division III poll, fell 7-1 to top-ranked Middlebury Friday, Dec. 1, but rebounded with a 4-1 win over defending national champion Norwich on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Goalie Dave Cinelli (Woodbridge, Ont.) made 36 saves to spark the win over Norwich. David Boehm (Eau Claire) scored a goal with three seconds left in the first period to tie the game and added a third-period goal. Mikhail Salienko (Riga, Latvia) had two goals.

Pierre Nicolet (Anchorage, Alaska) scored the lone goal in the loss to Middlebury.

The Pointers are the highest ranked of five Northern Collegiate Hockey Association teams in the poll this week. UW-River Falls is fifth, UW-Superior is sixth, St. Norbert is ninth and UW-Stout is 10th.
Middlebury remained the top-ranked team, while Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) is ranked second and Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) is ranked third.

Women's hockey

The women's hockey team is off this week after suffering a pair of losses to St. Mary's College last weekend. The Pointers are now 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NCHA.

The Pointers battled sixth-ranked St. Mary's into overtime on Friday, Dec. 1, before losing, 3-2. It marked their second overtime loss to a top 10 team in three games after also losing to UW-Superior two weeks ago. St. Mary's beat the Pointers 5-1 in the second game of the series on Saturday, Dec. 2.

UW-Stevens Point has just 13 players and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game on Friday behind goals from Holly Burns (Westminster, Vt.) and Alison St. Peter (Wisconsin Rapids). Freshman Diane Sawyer (Stillwater, Minn.) made 35 saves on Friday and 50 saves on Saturday for the Pointers.

Mandy Rhyner of Stevens Point scored the lone goal on Saturday for UW-SP, which will host UW-Eau Claire Dec. 15-16.

Swimming and Diving

The UW-SP men's and women's swimming teams will have their final meet before the holidays this week as they host UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9.

The teams both finished third at last weekend's Wheaton College Invitational.

Randy Boelk (Embarrass, Minn.) automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet in three events, swimming a time of 50.01 seconds in the 100 backstroke, a time of 1:51.21 in the 200 backstroke and a meet record time of 1:52.40 in the 200 individual medley.

Boelk was also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:24.16 as well as the second place 200 and 400 medley relays. Nick Hansen (West Bend) was the only other Pointer winner, posting a time of 21.17 in the 50 freestyle.

On the women's side, Christine Sammons (Hastings, Minn.) was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.57 and was a member of the second place 200 and 400 medley relay teams.

Wrestling

The Pointers were scheduled for their first dual meet of the season Thursday night, hosting UW-Platteville in a WIAC match at the Quandt Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.

UW-Stevens Point is ranked 14th in the latest Division III rankings and competed last weekend at the UW-Parkside Open in Kenosha. No team scores were kept in the meet.

Wes Kapping (Spring Valley) placed second at 174 pounds and Mitch Gehring (Slinger) was second at heavyweight to lead the Pointers on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Other top finishers for the Pointers included Chet Zdanczewicz (Avoca), who was fourth at 141 pounds, Ben Kureck (Delafield), who was fourth at 184 pounds and Yan White (Antigo), who was fourth at 197 pounds. Brady Holtz (Oconto Falls) and Jared Esala (Ashland) tied for fifth at 133 pounds and Mitch Gehring was fifth at heavyweight.
Nathan Preslaski (Pulaski) was sixth at 157 pounds and Joe Bavlnka (Germantown) was sixth at 165 pounds.

Women's soccer

After making its first-ever NCAA Division III final four appearance, the UW-SP women's soccer team dominated the All-Central Region team with twice as many selections as any other school.

The Pointers had six players named to the squad, including three on the first-team. First-team selections included seniors Margaret Domka, Marie Muhvic and Abby Rabinovitz. Senior Jennifer Schmit and junior Mickey Jacob were named to the second team and sophomore Molly Cady earned third-team honors. UW-SP finished 22-5 this past season and won its eighth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in nine years before advancing to the national semifinals.

Domka, a Stevens Point native, was one of the highest-scoring defenders in the country this season with 12 goals and three assists.
Muhvic, a Stevens Point native, had the highest-scoring season in WIAC history this year with 30 goals and 13 assists for 73 points. Her 173 career points are also a WIAC record. She was named the WIAC Player of the Year and was a second-team All-Region performer last season.

Rabinovitz, a Green Bay native, had the stingiest season in Pointer history, allowing just four goals in 1,586 minutes played. She made 177 saves for a .940 save percentage and had a .23 goals against average, which is the fifth lowest single-season in Division III history.

Schmit, a Hartford native, had a hand in 56 shutouts in her four-year career with the Pointers as one of the team's leaders on defense. The Pointers allowed just two goals in their last 13 matches of the season.
Jacob, a Neenah native, had 10 goals and five assists for 25 points from her midfield position. She had the winning goals in both the WIAC semifinal and championship matches, as well as the NCAA quarterfinal win over Salisbury State (Md.).

Cady, a Cottage Grove native, tied a school-record this season with 20 assists and had 14 goals to finish with 48 points, the third-highest single-season point total in school history.

Domka, Jacob and Cady were selected to the 13-member NCAA ournament squad for their performances in the Pointers' 1-0 final four loss to Tufts (Mass.).

Domka scored the lone goal in the 1-0 win over Macalester (Minn.) in the regional. Cady scored to beat Wheaten (Ill.) 1-0 in the regional final and Jacob scored with 21 minutes left in a 2-0 quarterfinal win over Salisbury State (Md.)

UW-SP finished fourth in the final NCAA Division III women's soccer rankings by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Pointers tied for third in the country with Trinity (Texas), having both lost in the semifinals of the national tournament, though Trinity beat the Pointers 2-1 in the second match of the season on Sept. 3. Three teams the Pointers eliminated in the tournament finished in the top 15 as Salisbury State (Md.) was ranked eighth, Wheaton (Ill.) finished ninth and Macalester (Minn.) was ranked 15th. All three were in the top 10 before losing to the Pointers, who entered the tournament ranked 20th.
