UW-SP's Boelk competes in backstroke at Olympic trials

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point swimmer Randy Boelk finished 74th among 88 swimmers in the men's 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Olympic trials in Indianapolis.

Boelk finished with a time of 59.99 seconds. He had a split of 28.63 over the first 50 meters and swam 31.36 over the final 50 meters.

Boelk, who was the lone NCAA Division 3 swimmer to qualify for the event, placed third at the national championships last March to earn All-American honors.

The top 16 swimmers in last Thursday's preliminaries qualified for the semifinals and the top eight swimmers from the semifinals moved on to last Friday's finals. Lenny Krayzelburg, the world record-holder in the 50-, 100- and 200-meter backstrokes, won the event in 53.84 seconds. Neil Walker was second in 54.85.

Boelk, an Embarrass, Minn. native, will be a senior for the Pointers this fall. He already has earned first-team All-American recognition in 19 different events and has won conference championships in 16 different events over the past three seasons.
