SPASH

Baseball: The Panthers roughed up Green Bay East Saturday in a doubleheader at Bukolt Park, 10-4 and 22-12. Seven SPASH players homered in the two games, including pitcher Brent Thauer, who hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the fourth inning of game two. Kyle Bohm and Kevin Polito both had solo homers in the first game while Steve Wiczek, Gabe Bauer, Jon Bergeron and Craig Miller hit home runs in the second game. Ben Peterson picked up the win the first game, going seven innings while allowing only four hits.

Bohm's three-run homer in the first inning set the tone as SPASH doubled up on Wausau East last Friday, 8-4. On the mound, Bohm went seven innings to pick up the win. The Panthers also scored three times in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Matt Pacyna and Wiczek both went 3-for-4.

Golf: SPASH topped three teams Monday to win its season-opening match at Lake Arrowhead in Nekoosa. The Panthers finished at 324 to beat D.C. Everest (339), Portage (343) and Adams-Friendship (376). Freshman Joe Pavelski was the medalist with nine-hole rounds of 37 and 40 for a 77. Jake Barge (81), Tim Trzebiatowski (81), Joe Meinholz (85) scored for the Panthers. "For our first meet, it's a good start for us. I'm very pleased with the outcome," SPASH coach John Schell said.

Girls soccer: The Panthers opened their season with a big road win over the defending WVC champions, D.C. Everest, 2-0 last Thursday. SPASH got on the board near the 70-minute mark as Kim Reese scored off of Abbey Peterson's corner kick. Then with just six seconds left, the Panthers sealed the win when Megan Oswall scored with an assist from Mandi Michelkamp. SPASH's defense held the Evergreens to only seven shots on goal. Janel McCarville had three saves and Nikki Falkowski made two saves in SPASH's net.

Softball: A disasterous third inning cost the Panthers last Thursday as SPASH fell to Wausau East, 4-2, at Zenoff Park. The Lumberjacks scored all four of their runs in the third, three of them on a throwing error. SPASH plated both of its runs in the first inning. Kristin Feltz led the Panthers with two hits.

Boys tennis: SPASH tied Wisconsin Rapids for second Saturday at the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Invitational. Brian Fagen and Luke Berg teamed at No. 3 doubles to take the bracket title. The No. 1 doubles team of Zach Newhouse and Anatoly Detwyler finished second, No. 1 singles player Matt Schrader was the runner-up and Chris Daode was second at No. 2 singles.

Girls track: The Panthers kicked off their outdoor season Tuesday, scoring 79 points to win its own triangular against Wausau East and Wisconsin Rapids. Tracy Knippel (triple jump and 100-meter dash), Abby Afori-Amoah (shotput), Kim Klosno (800 meters), Amber Perri (200 meters) and Kerry Hyland (3,200 meters) all won individual events. The 3,200 and 400 relays also finished first.

Pacelli

Baseball: Wausau West had its way with the Cardinals Saturday, dumping Pacelli, 11-1, at Memorial Park. The Warriors jumped on the Cardinals (3-1) for four runs in the second and third innings to take an 8-1 lead and didn't look back. Josh Owens took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs (four earned) and six hits.

Golf: Pacelli won its third straight match to start the season, downing Oneida High School, 171-193, at the Brown County Golf Course Wednesday. "It's the team's consistency that has won the matches for us so far this year," Pacelli coach Mike Okray said. Brandon Peterson was the medalist, shooting a 41. Also scoring were John Okray (42), Brandon Flugaur (42) and Matt Lepak (46).

The Cardinals topped visiting Shiocton Tuesday, 164-183, at the Stevens Point Country Club. Flugaur was the medalist with a 37 while John Okray (38), Peterson (40) and Lepak (49) scored.

Softball: The Cardinals won a pair of games Saturday to capture the Wisconsin Dells Tournament title. In the championship, Pacelli got off to a hot start and dropped Wisconsin Dells, 8-2. Aerin Spitz allowed only five hits in a complete-game victory. Erin McCann's triple keyed the hot start. In the semifinal against Marshall, Pacelli scored four times in the first inning to top Marshall, 5-2. Lindsey Radomski tripled and Lyndsey Gagas had a double. On the mound, Gagas threw a one-hitter while striking out five.

Boys track: Nate Swenson won the high jump and triple jump to lead the Cardinals to a third place finish at Saturday's Knights of Columbus Relays in La Crosse. Greg Snow won the pole vault and Franz Klein finished first in the steeplechase. The 400 relay also won.

Girls track: Pacelli finished third overall as a trio of relays and two individuals won events at the Knights of Columbus Relays in La Crosse Saturday. Emily Swenson (100 hurdles and Lisa Ksionsk (triple jump) finished first in their respective events while the 3,200 relay, 800 relay and 400 relay took top honors too.

Amherst

Baseball: The Falcons edged Weyauwega-Fremont in dramatic fashion Monday, as Philip Koback singled in Matt Mehne in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 home win. Casey Neuville, Koback and Todd Orlowski each had two hits.

The Falcons had their way with Plainfield Tri-County last Friday, routing the Penguins, 10-0. Orlowski, Mehne and Koback each had two hits as Amherst scored three times in the first inning and four times in the third. Luke Aubut allowed only two hits in four innings to get the win.

Mehne went the distance, scattering three hits as the Falcons dropped Shiocton on the road last Thursday 4-1.

Golf: Amherst had an easy time with Iola-Scandinavia last Friday, beating the Thunderbirds, 169-208. Matt Clinton (40), Brian Pionkowski (42), Dan Janikowski (42) and Jeremy Sherf (45) scored for the Falcons.

The Falcons edged host Wittenberg-Birnamwood in their season opener last Thursday, 170-172. Sherf was the medalist with a 40 while Pionkowski (42), Jeff Cloninger (42), Clinton (46) and Janikowski (46) also competed.

Softball: A fast start helped Amherst crush Weyauwega-Fremont, 10-0, Monday. Jenny Jastromski and Crystal Morgan hit back-to-back homers and Anne Stanislawski had three hits in the win. On the mound, Jastromski allowed only three hits and struck out nine.

Jastromski blanked Shiocton, 3-0, last Thursday. Jastromski and Jamie Krutza each drove in a run in the win.

Boys track: Freshman Philip Koback won the 100 and 200 meters and Dan Ehr finished first in the 1,600 meters Tuesday to lead the Falcons to a second-place finish at the Amherst Invitational Tuesday. Koback was second in the long jump and R. Schulfer tied for second in the discus.

Girls track: Missy Kayon (100 hurdles and high jump), Kristin Woyak (discus) and Jane Ovanin (1,600 meters) finished first as the Falcons were second with 103 points at the Amherst Invitational Tuesday. Samantha Diver (1,600 meters), Jenny Baker (100 meters) and Woyak (3,200 meters) took second.

Almond-Bancroft

Baseball: A quick start wasn't enough as Iola-Scandinavia rallied for a 6-3 win last Thursday.

Softball: The Eagles held on for a 10-9 win Monday at Wild Rose. A-B led 8-0 after three innings, but the Wildcats rallied for six runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Sarah Berry and Andrea Cummings each had three hits. Emily Getzloff picked up the win, striking out five and walking five.

The Eagles roughed up Rosholt last Thursday, scoring 13 unanswered runs in a 13-2 home win. A-B trailed 2-0 after the first inning before exploding for three runs in the second and third innings and four more in the sixth. Emily Getzloff allowed just two hits while Kim Koch finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Amber Glodowski and Andrea Cummings both had a pair of hits.

Boys track: Mike Johnson won the 400 and was second in the 800 to lead A-B to a fifth- place finish at the Amherst Invitational Tuesday. David Danforth was the Eagles' next highest finisher with a third-place effort in the 3,200 meters.

Johnson was second in the 800 meters and Nick Sanchez grabbed a runner-up spot in the shotput last Thursday at the Necedah Invitational. The Eagles finished fourth.

Girls track: Stephanie Jenz captured first place in the shotput as the Eagles finished third at the Amherst Invitational Tuesday. Jenz (100 hurdles), Andrea Wimmer (discus), Renee Reince (triple jump) and Cindy Nickel (long jump) all finished second in their respective events.

Jenz captured the shotput and the 100 hurdles last Thursday to lead A-B to a third place finish at the Necedah Invitational. Nickel also got first-place points, winning the 200 meters.

Rosholt

Baseball: Rosholt dropped its first game of the season Saturday, falling, 8-7, at Spencer. Ryan Zdroik had a two-run homer to give the Hornets (7-1) a 3-1 lead in the third inning but the Rockets rallied. Randy Printz went 4-for-4 at the plate for Rosholt.

Tom Stanislawski and Senica Omernik teamed to throw a no-hitter last Thursday in a 12-0 win over Gresham. Brad Zdroik led off the game with a home run and Ryan Zdroik and Andy Hartvig added homers as Stanislawski and Omernik shut down the Wildcats. In the five-inning no-hitter, the two combined for six strikeouts and three walks.

Softball: The Hornets had their best hitting performance of the year but dropped a pair of games at Plainfield Tri-County Saturday, 6-5 and 14-8. Rosholt had 20 hits in the two games combined, led by Jennifer Nowland's six and Jennifer Kosmalski's four.

Rosholt led 2-0 after one inning but fell, 13-2, last Thursday at Almond-Bancroft.

Boys track: Rosholt was third at the Iola-Scandinavia quadrangular last Thursday. Luke Lane won the 200 meters and was second in the 400 meters and Rob Cherek was the runner-up in the 110 hurdles and the 800 meters.

Girls track: Eight Hornets won events as Rosholt finished first at the Iola-Scandinavia quadrangular last Thursday. Jenna Eschenbauch (100 meters), Pirjo Eelmaa (200 meters), Kendra Kazemba (300 hurdles), Jen Zdroik (1,600 meters), Stephanie Wierzba (shot put) and Keri Kurszewski (discus) all finished first in their respective events.
