SPASH
Baseball: The Panthers had an offensive
onslaught Tuesday against Merrill, crushing the Bluejays 22-0 at Bukolt Park. Gabe Bauer and Kevin Polito hit solo
shots in a nine-run second and Craig Miller and Matt Pacyna jacked three-run homers in the fourth inning. Kyle
Bohm, Adam Pezewski, Steve Wiczek and Bauer each had three hits. Chris Jahntz had a triple as the Panthers collected
22 hits.
SPASH came up short in its comeback attempt Saturday, falling 8-7 to Eau Claire
North. The Panthers trailed 6-0 (all runs were unearned) after the top of the first but scored six runs of their
own in the bottom half of the inning. Eau Claire then plated two runs in the top of the seventh and SPASH could
only push one across in the bottom of the seventh. Bohm's three-run homer was the highlight in the opening inning.
The Panthers opened their season Saturday with a 10-6 win over Oconomowoc. Pacyna's
three-run shot in the second gave SPASH a 4-3 lead and then the Panthers scored a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth
and sixth innings. Kevin Fitzgerald hit a solo shot in the fourth and Wiczek had a two-run blast in the seventh.
Wiczek was 2-for-4 and Fitzgerald was 2-for-2 while Bohm allowed nine hits and struck out eight on the mound.
Softball: The Panthers rallied to send
their Wisconsin Valley Conference opener into extra innings and then scored a run in the top of the eighth to beat
host Merrill 4-3. Sammy Polito's single in the eighth inning scored Kristin Rosicky to give SPASH the lead. Michelle
Rosicky was thrown out trying to score on the play, ending the inning.
RBI singles by Kristin Rosicky and Dana Jacquin got the Panthers within a run,
3-2 in the sixth. Darcia Wesenberg's sacrifice fly in the seventh tied the game at 3-3.
"We were fortunate today to be able to overcome the many mistakes we made
in the field," SPASH coach Tom Drohner said. "I give our girls a lot of credit, they never gave up and
it paid off."
SPASH swept a doubleheader at Marshfield Saturday, winning by scores of 8-2 and
2-1. In the finale, the Panthers scored once in the seventh and eighth innings to win. Rachel Ploetz's single scored
Polito in the bottom of the eighth. Jodi Kostuchowski pitched eight innings and allowed just three hits. Kristen
Feltz and Kristin Rosicky were 2-for-3. In the opener, SPASH jumped to an early lead and didn't look back.
SPASH's season started on a hot note despite cold temperatures last Friday as the
Panthers creamed New London 13-3. The home team scored three times in the first and then six times in the second.
Feltz had two of her four RBIs in the inning and Rachel Ploetz also had a two-run single. SPASH scored three more
in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to win by the 10-run rule. Panther pitchers Kostuchowski and Alexis
Mains held the Bulldogs to four hits, with Kostuchowski picking up the win for her five innings of work.
Boys track: The Panthers took 17th at
the Track and Field Association meet in Madison Saturday. Chad Erspamer (triple jump) and the 400-meter relay (Nate
Olson, Ross Adamczak, Travis Laird and Cory Flisakowski) were sixth.
Girls track: Tracy Knippel finished
third in the triple jump and Sarah Schubert was fifth in the long jump to lead SPASH at the Track and Field Association
meet Saturday in Madison. The 1,600-meter relay of Amber Perri, Schubert, Kali Pace-Graczyk and Kim Klosno was
sixth.
The Panthers were third last Thursday at the Wausau West Warrior Invitational,
scoring 78 points. The eight-lap relay (Sharine Watkins, Shubert, Perri and Klosno) won in 3:01.27. Perri (220-yard
dash), Kerry Hyland (1,600 run) and the four-lap relay (Knippel, Watkins, Kathleen Lehman and Jacy Harer.
Pacelli
Baseball: Josh Owens hit a grand slam
in the second inning and the Cardinals cruised to a 19-1 win at Athens Monday. Pacelli (3-0) scored twice in the
first, five times in the second and fifth innings and had seven runs in the third. Owens finished with five RBIs,
Derick Lepak had three RBIs, and David Blaha and Jason Lepak both drove in a pair of runs. Owens and Josh Konz
combined to allow just one run and two hits.
Pacelli withstood an Iola-Scandinavia rally to top the Thunderbirds on the road
last Thursday, 14-10. The Cardinals jumped to a 10-5 lead after three innings but I-S scored four times in the
fourth to get within one. Pacelli added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as reliever Brad Heeg shut down
the Thunderbirds. Owens had four RBI, including a run-scoring triple in the third, and Adam Brazzale finished 2-for-3.
Softball: Lyndsey Gagas went 4-for-4
to lead the Cardinals to a 10-4 home win Tuesday. Amanda Tepp picked up the win on the mound. Stacey LaBlanc and
Lynsey Johnson each had two hits.
Boys golf: The Cardinals edged Wittenberg-Birnamwood
174-175 in their season opener Tuesday. Senior Brandon Peterson came in with the low score for Pacelli with a 39.
John Wachowiak had 40, John Okray 43 and Brandon Flugaur 52.
"I told the boys that we needed to average 45 per player in the first few
meets to even think about competing against these new teams and the boys came through with a team average of just
over 43," Pacelli coach Mike Okray said. "It was great that we won our first match but the competition
is so good this year that I don't think a 174 will win many matches once the weather gets nice."
Amherst
Baseball: Menominee scored twice in
the top of the sixth and downed Amherst 4-3 Monday in Amherst. The Falcons scored single runs in the second, third
and fourth innings, one coming on Jason Heinz's solo shot.
The Falcons scored 10 times in the first inning and the rout was on in a 19-3 rout
at home last Thursday over Manawa. Jason Heinz had 5 RBIs, including a two-run homer, while Todd Orlowski and Phillip
Koback each knocked in a pair of runs. Matt Mehne picked up the win in four innings of work.
Softball: The Falcons improved to 7-0
on the season with a 5-2 win at Almond-Bancroft Tuesday. Jenny Jastromski allowed only three hits and struck out
10 to get the complete game win. Anne Stanislawski scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning to give Amherst
a 3-2 lead. In the seventh, Crystal Morgan had a RBI single and then scored on an error. Stanislawski was 2-for-3
and scored three runs while Morgan was 2-for-4.
Amherst had its way Monday at home against Menominee, winning 11-0 in five innings.
Jastromski allowed only one hit, struck out 12 and walked one. The Falcons scored three times in the first, had
six in the third and had two in the fourth. Jenny Dombrowski's two-run homer was the highlight of the third inning.
Stanislawski was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Morgan had three RBIs.
The Falcons scored three times in the fifth inning to beat visiting Manawa 4-1
last Thursday. Jastromski struck out 10, walked four and gave up four hits in seven innings. JoAnn Konkol had a
two-run triple in Amherst's big inning.
Almond-Bancroft
Baseball: Port Edwards jumped on A-B
Monday, scoring seven runs in the first inning en route to a 14-4 win over the Eagles (1-2). Starter Kent Dernbach
allowed 11 runs, but only four were earned as the Eagles committed four errors.
The Eagles got ahead early and topped Plainfield Tri-County at home last Thursday
9-2. A-B scored four runs in the second and three in the sixth. Kent Dernbach, who picked up the win on the mound
with nine strikeouts, was 3-for-4.
Softball: The Eagles fell 5-2 to visiting
Amherst Tuesday. A-B scored twice in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2, highlighted by Amber Glodowski's
RBI double. Emily Getzloff allowed only six hits in seven innings.
A-B held a 1-0 lead after one inning but Tigerton scored four unanswered runs to
top the Eagles 4-1. Glodowski drove in A-B's lone run on a single. Getzloff gave up four runs on seven hits while
striking out nine. The Eagles were held to three hits.
A-B withstood a Plainfield Tri-County rally last Thursday and held on for a 3-2
road win. The Eagles scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead but the Penguins
rallied with runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Sarah Berry and Glodowski were 2-for-3.
Boys track: A-B finished third with
48 points last Thursday at the Necedah Invitational. Mike Johnson won the 800-meter run (2:19.81) and was second
in the 400 dash (:56.2), setting school records in both events.
Girls track: The Eagles were third with
36 points at the Necedah Invitational last Thursday. Cindy Nickel finished second in the 200 dash and long jump.
Rosholt
Baseball: A five-run fourth inning and
a four-run seventh were enough for Rosholt (5-0) to outlast Plainfield Tri-County 12-8 at home Monday. Andy Hartvig
had two hits and three RBI and Senica Omernik had two hits and a pair of RBI in the win.
The Hornets jumped to a 9-0 lead against Port Edwards and went on to an 11-3 win
last Thursday at home. Bryce Domask hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Ryan Zdroik was 3-for-3 with
two doubles and a triple and Tom Stanislawski added a solo shot. Domask allowed only three hits and no runs in
five innings while striking out six.
Softball: Rosholt nearly won for the second time in as many games Monday but Wild
Rose rallied in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Hornets 4-3. Rosholt (1-5 overall) had scored two runs in
the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Erin O'Neil was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, Jennifer Nauman was 2-for-3 and
Michelle Kosmalski had two hits and a RBI. Emily Steines allowed six hits in seven innings and had seven strikeouts.
The Hornets cracked the win column for the first time in three years with a 12-2
rout of Bowler last Thursday at home. Rosholt scored twice in the second, four times in the third and five more
in the fifth to take an11-0 lead. The Hornets had only five hits and were benefited by seven errors. Steines allowed
just three hits in seven innings for Rosholt.
Girls track: Jenna Eschenbauch won two
events and finished second in another to lead Rosholt to a sixth place finish (54 points) at the Wausau West Warrior
Invite last Thursday. Eschenbauch was first in the high jump (5-foot-1) and 220-yard hurdles (31.66) and took second
in the 60-yard dash. Amy Scott was second in the high jump and Tasha Check finished third in the 220-yard dash.
"A lot of our younger athletes got a chance and were competitive and made
progress," Rosholt coach Mike Trzebiatowski said.
