Winona State takes two from UW-SP baseball

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team ran into red-hot Winona State in a doubleheader Monday and fell to the visiting Warriors 7-1 and 6-3. The sweep gave Winona State (29-10) 12 wins in a row and 18 victories in its last 19 games. The losses broke a two-game winning streak for UW-SP (19-10). The Pointers have lost six of their last eight games.

The Warriors shut down UW-SP's bats in both games, as the Pointers could muster only five hits in each contest.

In the first game, Jon Jagler scored on an error for UW-SP's lone run. He finished 2-for-3 at the plate. UW-SP's Randy Reed hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. On the mound, Eric Schlender allowed five earned runs in four-and-one-third innings. Jared Szews retired the final eight batters he faced after surrendering hits to the first two batters he faced.

Molski's solo homer in the third inning gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead and catcher Nick Cahoon's RBI single in the sixth inning put UW-SP ahead 2-0.

Pointers - UW-La Crosse doubleheader

The Pointers had a pair of damaging WIAC losses last Friday when UW-La Crosse swept a doubleheader at UW-SP.

An eight-run eighth inning gave the Eagles a 13-6 lead in the first game, a 14-6 La Crosse win. All eight runs in the inning came with two outs as starter Bill Verbrick and reliever Jared Szews were tagged in the La Crosse attack. UW-SP's Rob Govek went 4-for-5 at the plate and Kevin Fry had three RBIs.

The Eagles rallied again in game two, scoring five runs in the last three innings to top the Pointers 9-5. Denver Harris was 4-for-4 with two solo homers and four RBIs. His second solo shot broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning. A James DeCremer two-run double in the eighth and a two-run home run by Tom Tollefson in the ninth sealed the win.
