UW-SP names top athletes; trio named Academic All-Americans

Five athletes have been honored as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Athletes of the Year for their performances during the 1999-00 school year.

Men's basketball player Brant Bailey is the top male athlete in a team sport, while women's basketball player Jessica Ott earned the women's team sport honor. Swimmer Randy Boelk and cross country/track runner Dan Schwamberger shared men's individual sport honors, while swimmer Mary Agazzi was the school's top female individual sport athlete. The awards are selected by the entire UW-SP coaching staff.

It's quite a feat for any school to land an Academic All-American, but to land three on one team is especially rare. That's precisely what the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has done in the latest GTE Academic All-American voting as swimmer Brent Newport, cross country runner Dan Schwamberger and swimmer Becca Uphoff all earned the honor on the Fall/Winter team for at-large sports. UW-Stevens Point was one of only three schools to land three at-large Academic All-Americans, joining Emory (Ga.) and UC-San Diego.

Newport was a men's first-team selection, while Schwamberger earned men's second team recognition and Uphoff was a women's third-team honoree. The Pointers also had a selection earlier this season in football as Andy Palzkill was a second-team performer. The teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The at-large teams consist of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA athletes in fall and winter sports besides football, volleyball and basketball.

"Brent's, Dan's, Becca's, and all of our athletes' academic accomplishments this year provide ample proof that Division III colleges and universities can field many of the best athletes in the country while continuing to emphasize scholarship first," UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Thomas George said.

Newport, a senior from Berlin, Wis., boasts a 3.97 GPA in Biology and Business Administration with minors in Chemistry and Computer Information Systems. Newport qualified for the NCAA Division III meet in all four events and earned All-American honors in the 400 medley relay, finishing sixth.

Schwamberger, a senior from North Mankato, Minn., holds a 3.91 grade point average in Forest Management. He was a cross country All-American the past two seasons, finishing 25th at the NCAA Division III national meet as a senior and 20th as a junior. Schwamberger also recently won the national championship in the 5000 meters at the Division III indoor track meet. He also was named UW-Stevens Point's outstanding male athlete in an individual sport for the 1999-00 season.

Uphoff, a senior from Madison and a graduate of West High School, is majoring in Communicative Disorders with a minor in Psychology and boasts a 3.83 GPA. She became a five-time All-American by finishing sixth in the 200 freestyle relay and seventh in the 800 freestyle relay.

Baseball

UW-Whitewater took a pair of games from the visiting Pointers Saturday, dropping UW-SP 12-3 and 7-5 to end Point's six-game winning streak.
The Warhawks used an eight-run second inning to take the first game and then rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the nightcap. UW-SP had won 13 of its previous 14 games and fell to 17-6 for the season.

UW-Whitewater jumped to a 12-0 lead in the opener and pitcher Mike Bolson held the Pointers without a hit until Mike McCann's two-out single in the sixth inning. Kevin Fry hit a two-run double in the seventh and Jon Jagler had a run-scoring single in the eighth for UW-SP.

In the second game, Fry hit a bases-loaded double to give the Pointers a 3-0 first-inning lead and Sam Molski added another run with a RBI single in the second. After scoring once in the first inning, Whitewater scored four times in the bottom of the third and added two more in the fourth. Mike McCann had four of UW-SP's eight hits at 4-for-5.

Pointers-Augsburg doubleheader

UW-SP pounded out 25 runs and 28 hits in sweeping a pair of non-conference baseball games from Augsburg last Thursday at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. The Pointers won the opening game 13-2 and then added 16 hits in the second game, a 12-9 victory, as Randy Reed went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Jared Szews scattered eight hits over four innings for the win in the first game. In the nightcap, freshman Jeremy Zimmerman earned his first career win by pitching the first four innings. Pat Bloom, Eric Schlender and Justin Duerkop each threw one inning of relief.

Softball

Freshman pitcher Karen Guckenberger continued her stellar debut season, firing her fourth shutout of the season to help the Pointers earn a split with UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader Tuesday at McCarty Field.

The Titans won the opening game of the WIAC twinbill in dramatic fashion, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh and then holding off a Pointer rally in the bottom of the inning.

In the nightcap, Guckenberger allowed only four hits as UW-SP held on for a 1-0 win. She allowed a pair of hits in the first inning and two more in the sixth, and lowered her earned run average to 0.83.

UW-SP gave Guckenberger the only run she needed in the second inning when Kimberly Grubba was hit by a pitch to open the inning and scored on a one-out double by Carrie Hermsen. Oshkosh's freshman pitcher Loni Owens kept the Pointers guessing, holding them to five hits.

Sarah Berg's solo homer in the sixth inning of the first game gave UW-SP a 2-1 lead. After the Titans struck back in the seventh, the Pointers had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the inning. Pinch-runner Jill Van Wychen scored from third base on a wild pitch, but pinch-runner Carrie Hermsen advanced to third and rounded the base too far. Robin Schmidt, the Titans' catcher, retrieved the ball and threw out Hermsen, the potential tying run, sliding back to third.

Illinois Wesleyan Tournament

After having its eight-game win streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to the University of Chicago in Sunday's opener, the Pointers bounced back to finish 4-1 at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament in Bloomington.

The Pointers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Chicago, but surrendered two unearned runs in the second and couldn't regain their lead. UW-SP scored its only run on a two-out single by Michelle Gerber, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the second game, the Pointers led 3-2 entering the seventh inning and erupted for four runs, highlighted by Sarah Berg's bases-loaded triple. Berg was 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Cary Briley was 2-for-4. Kimberly Grubba and Sarah Grubba both had run-scoring doubles. Guckenberger pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Track and field

Megan Lundahl won the discus and hammer throws to lead the UW-SP women's track and field team to a second place finish at Saturday's North Central Invitational in Naperville, Ill. UW-SP's men's team also finished second, falling four-and-a-half points behind UW-Oshkosh. The Titans won the women's title by 34 points.

Other winners included former Stevens Point Area Senior High standout Jody Butkowski (triple jump), Becky Lebak (5,000-meter run), Leah Juno (800 meters), Missy Kraemer (400 meters) and the 1,600-meter relay.

On the men's side, the Pointers had six individuals and one relay win titles. Eric Miller (200 meters), Craig Gunderson (400 meters), Chris Horvat (800 meters), Dan Schwamberger (5,000 meters), Joel Schult (discus), Josh Keim (hammer throw) and 1,600-meter relay all finished first in their respective events.
