Plover River Alliance sets structure

The Plover River Alliance formalized its structure and elected directors and officers July 19 at the Stevens Point Recreation Center.

The Alliance's goal is protect the Plover River for recreation and wildlife, and to maintain its water quality. The river basin is the drinking water source for the city of Stevens Point.

The Alliance has been in existence for several years as a committee of the Community Foundation of Portage County. One of the reasons for formalizing its structure is to strengthen its chances of obtaining state Stewardship funds to help in the purchase of conservation easements. The easements, which would be bought from willing sellers, would prevent development of the property but would allow existing uses such as farming, forestry and recreation to continue.

Directors elected at the meeting were Bill Berry, Greg Disher, Bill Peterson, Nick Somers, George Rogers, Dan Trainer and Greg Wysocki.
Officers elected by the directors were Rogers, president; Wysocki, vice president; and Berry, secretary-treasurer, and a paid dues structure was established.
