Brother Gary E. Smith

Brother Gary Eugene Smith, FSC, 67, a former dean of students and religion teacher at Pacelli High School in Stevens Point, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Manitowoc, with the Rev. Daniel Felton officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, in Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Ill.

Visitation will be at Roncalli High School auditorium in Manitowoc from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, and at the church from 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30. A prayer service led by the Rev. Daniel Felton and Deacon Rich Bahnaman will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium.

Memorials can be given to Roncalli High School Student Scholarship Program, the Roncalli High School Music Department Piano Fund, Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters or to the De La Salle Christian Brothers Vocation Fund, 7650 S. County Line Road, Burr Ridge, IL 60527.

A De La Salle Christian Brother for 26 years, he was born July 12, 1944, in Union City, Pa., a son of the late Harold E. and Martha E. (Gilson) Smith. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich., and master's degrees from Loyola University in Chicago and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.

He served as a religious catechist, teacher, and administrator in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota and Bethlehem, Palestine. He taught at Pacelli High School in Stevens Point for several years beginning in 1979. His final assignment for the last 14 years was at Roncalli High School in Manitowoc.

Survivors include two brothers, James, Ohio, and Ralf, Elletsville, Ind.; the Christian Brothers of his community; and the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Midwest Province.
