Charles D. Hartvig

Charles D. Hartvig, 95, Iola, died Saturday, July 31, 2010, at the Ellefson House in Iola.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Iola, with the Rev. Dennis Olson officiating. Burial will be in Our Savior Lutheran Cemetery in Iola.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the service.

Mr. Hartvig was born March 12, 1915, in Iola, a son of the late Theodore and Marie (Pederson) Hartvig. He graduated from Iola High School and was on the 1934 basketball team that went to the Wisconsin State Basketball Tournament. He graduated from Central State Teachers College in 1938.

He was an Army World War II veteran, serving in Central Europe and the Rhineland Theater.

He taught life sciences and biology at Iola-Scandinavia High School, was a milk hauler for Morning Glory for 17 years and a bookkeeper for Carl Waller's service station.

He was a member of the Sons of Norway-Norskeland Lodge 5-580, Norskeland Dancers, Our Savior Lutheran Church Choir, the Iola Historical Society and American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 of Iola.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by six sisters, Klara Carley Johnson, Ruth Hartvig, Ruby Taylor, Theresa Loken, Leona Hartvig and Alpha Bakeng; and three brothers, Orin, Allen and Herbert.
