Mary Ellen Schultz

Mary Ellen Schultz, 71, Lakewood, a former Amherst resident and a former executive director of the Portage County Housing Authority, died at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010.

A Funeral Mass will be held at noon Saturday at St. Mary of The Lakes Catholic Church in Lakewood, with the Rev. David Schmidt officiating.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the Mass.

Suminski-Weber-Hill Funeral Home in Wabeno is assisting the family.

A memorial will be established in her name.

Mrs. Schultz was born Oct. 7, 1938, in Green Bay, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Hildegard (Heinritz) Bins.

She received a bachelor's degree from St. Norbert College in 1960.

She was married to Les Schultz on Aug. 26, 1961.

They moved to Amherst in 1966.

She started her career as an elementary school teacher. After raising her family she returned to work for Portage County Social Services. She retired in 2001 as executive director of the Portage County Housing Authority.

She was an active volunteer with various organizations, including the Christian Thrift Store in Wabeno. She was a member of the Lakes Country Public Library Book Club and the Oconto County Homemakers.

Survivors include her husband, Lakewood; two daughters, Frances Schultz, Madison, and Lois (Lowie) Schultz, Merrill; two sons, Mark, Oxnard, Calif., and Chris, Waupaca; one sister, Susan (Bill) Johnson, Marinette; two brothers, Bill (Patti) Bins, Houston, Texas, and Larry Bins, Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
