Merle D. Turner

Merle D. Turner, 90, Almond, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Crystal River Nursing Home in Waupaca.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca. Burial of cremains will take place at First Belmont Cemetery in the town of Belmont in the spring.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 9 a.m. Saturday until the service.

Mr. Turner was born Jan. 14, 1920, in the town of Belmont in Portage County, a son of the late Fred and Florence (Bucknell) Turner.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from July 6, 1942, to Jan. 6, 1946. He had been stationed on the island of Tinian in the Western Pacific.

He was married to Adora Eastman on Oct. 27, 1962, at Almond United Methodist Church in Almond.

After serving in the military, he became a cash crop farmer in Almond until 1974. He then went to work at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King where he was a supervisor in the housekeeping department.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joseph, Bastrop, Texas, and Thomas, Almond; two granddaughters, Patience and Molly Turner, Almond; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Claire; and four sisters, Naomi Wiles, Marie Harvey, Lea Wenzel and Doris Ryan.
