Donald D. Thorson

Donald D. Thorson, 75, 8055 County Road Z, Custer, died unexpectedly at his home Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at the Plover-Shuda Family Funeral Home in Plover, with Dwaine Habrat, pastoral minister of St. Stanislaus Parish, officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 p.m. Monday until the services.

Mr. Thorson was born Oct. 31, 1934, in Black Earth, a son of the late Russell and Ada (Bollig) Thorson.

He entered the United States Navy on Jan. 13, 1953. During his service, he was a Navy Seal, medical officer, then went into the administration aspect of the military where he was utilized in restructuring and running military hospitals and facilities throughout the United States. He earned the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Combat Action Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation and Navy Achievement Medal.

While in service, he received bachelor of arts degrees in administration, accounting and engineering and master's degrees in administration, accounting and nuclear power.

He was married to Sandy McBrayne on Jan. 12, 1960, in Carson City, Nev. She died in 2004.

After living throughout the United States, he chose to retire in Glenview, Ill., where he was honorably discharged after 27 years of service on Aug. 31, 1980.

He worked in Illinois for a nuclear power plant for a while, then moved to the Sun Prairie area where he and his wife obtained CDL licensing and started as an over-the-road team of semi drivers. They traveled for 25 years with their home based first in Plover and then they built another in Polonia where they eventually retired.

During his driving career he took breaks from the road and he served as business administrator for J&L Transport in Almond and then later helped in the process to set up Hospice of Portage County.

Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Thorson, Polonia; two sons, Kerry, San Francisco, Calif., and David (Lisa), Sacramento, Calif.; one brother Ken (Nancy), Tallahassee, Fla.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special "daughter," Heather Ann (Clifford) Ruland, Stevens Point.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Michael.
