Virgil B. Polum

Virgil B. Polum, 89, 3283 Soo Marie Ave., Stevens Point, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at St. Michael's Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Potaczek officiating. Burial will be in Guardian Angel Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Boston Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and at the church from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the Mass.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Portage County.

Mr. Polum was born June 28, 1920, in Mountain Lake, Minn., a son of the late Benjamin and Helen (Grubba) Polum. His family moved to Stevens Point and he attended local grade schools and graduated from Stevens Point High School.

He was inducted into the U.S. military on Oct. 15, 1940. During his time of service he earned an Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, an American Defense Service Medal, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star and six Over Seas Service Bars. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 16, 1945.

He was married to Constance Leary on Oct. 2, 1948, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. She died on Dec. 19, 2008.

After being discharged from the military, he began working for Soo Line Railroad. He worked as a switchman and a brakeman for more than 35 years and retired in 1981.

Survivors include one daughter, Yvonne (Dale) Tinklenberg, Plover; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Tinklenberg, Milwaukee.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, George.
