Charlotte Helene Devine

Charlotte Helene (Scherf) Devine, 79, a former Plover resident and the mother of Almond and Stevens Point women, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Church in Owen.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the Mass.

Thorp Funeral Home in Thorp assisted the family.

Mrs. Devine was born Aug. 10, 1930, and was adopted from a Sparta orphanage by the late Fred and Mary (Torgeson) Scherf. She grew up on a farm near Longwood and attended elementary school in that area. She received a high school diploma from Withee High School and furthered her education at the Eau Claire Teacher's College.

She was married to Peter Devine on Dec. 15, 1950. He preceded her in death.

They took over her father's farm when he died.

She taught at times in rural school districts, including the same two-room schoolhouse she attended, and also helped with the farm work. They later moved to a house along the seventh tee of the Meadowview Golf Course in Owen.

She taught at Holy Rosary Elementary School in Owen, then left to open a Sears Catalog Store on Main Street in Owen. Years later, Charlotte took a position at ITT in Thorp. She remained there until the family moved to Plover in 1978, and then to Appleton a couple of years later.

Upon her retirement from the town of Grand Chute, she and her husband built a new home on Meadowview Golf Course, one tee down from their previous home in Owen. After her husband's death, she moved to Stevens Point.

She was a self-taught seamstress and created christening gowns, quilts, brides, bridesmaid, prom dresses and other items.

Survivors include six daughters, Cindy (Rod) Quelle, Phillips, Lynda (Tony Gechas) Devine, Rhinelander, Mary (Jerry) Devine-Giese, Almond, Janine (Kent) Gaede, Stevens Point, Karen (Tip) (John) Jahnel, Appleton, and Michelle "Punky" (Mike) Devine Giese, Oshkosh; two sons, Bill (Sue) and Tim (Carol), both of Owen; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
